FrancisScottKeyFitzgerald（September24,1896–December21,1940）wasanAmericanauthorofnovelsandshortstories,whoseworksaretheparadigmwritingsoftheJazzAge.HeiswidelyregardedbymanyasoneofthegreatestAmericanwritersofthe20thcentury.TheGreatGatsbyisamasterpieceofFitzgerald’sworks.FirstpublishedonApril10,1925,itissetonLongIsland'sNorthShoreandinNewYorkCityduringthesummerof1922.ThenoveltakesplacefollowingtheWorldWarI.Afteritsrepublishingin1945and1953,itquicklyfoundawidereadershipandistodaywidelyregardedasaparagonoftheGreatAmericanNovel,andaliteraryclassic.InTheGreatGatsbyFitzgeraldpresentsaverydifferentviewofGatsby.Gatsbyisayoung,mysteriousmillionairelaterrevealedtobeabootlegger,withshadybusinessconnectionsandanobsessiveloveforDaisyFayBuchanan,whomhehadmetwhenhewasayoungofficerinWorldWarI.Afterthewar,GatsbycameeastandboughthismansionnearDaisyandTom,wherehehostspartieshopingshewillvisit,andthenGatsbyandDaisybeginaloveaffair.AsforGatsby,Daisyisrepresentingasagoalhewantstoachieve;therefore,hehasadreamtoliveup.However,thedreamisnotrealandcontributestoGatsby’sdeath.

Therefore,alotofscholarshavemadedeepstudyonthisnovel.Firstly,somepeoplearetalkingaboutGatsbyandhisdream.CuiShu-chen’sCharacterandSymbolsinTheGreatGatsby（1995）itissuggestedthatJayGatsbyisthemoststrikingfigureinthenovel,whoisinpursuitofanelusivedreamwhicheventhoughsometimesiswithinhisgrasp,continuessomehowtoevadehim.Withgreatmagnitudeofhisglitteringillusionandthesinglemindedness,Gatsbytriestomakeitarealityandhesacrificeshislifeonthealtarofhisdream,unawarethatitiscomposedoftheephemeralstuffofthepast.What’smore,HuangChunying,theauthorofThePursuitandLossofAmericanDream（2004）,pointsoutthatGatsbyisnotonlyaconcretemanifestationofconflictbetweenfantasyandrealityinreallife,butalsotheembodimentofAmericanromantichero.YangWeilueobservesthevariousstylesofFitzgerald’sworks;includingoneofgreatmasterpiece,CausesofGatsby‘sTragedy（1995）.HepointsoutthatonepartofGatsby’s“ideal”orhisfirst“dream”istogetrich,Gatsbythinksmoneycanbuyloveandhappiness,soitseemstohimthatthisdreamisquitereasonable.Butheneverrealizesthisisa“commondream”,itoriginatedfromthe“goldrush”inAmericanhistory.

Secondly,otherscholarspayattentiontoGatsby’sattitudetowardslifetounderstandhischaracters.YaoWenjun,theauthorofGatsbyandFranklin‘sSpiritontheOriginoftheHeroofTheGreatGatsby（2002）,saidthatGatsbydidhaveanenergetic“schedule”inhischildhood,hewasdreamingtobetterhimselfallthetimeinorderthathecangetrichsomeday.Gatsbyalsohasawonderful“generalresolves”,whichsetstrictdemandsonhimself.Inhisconclusion,thosepointsareoriginformFranklin‘sspirit.HealsopointsoutthatGatsby’sgreateststrengthisa“platonicconceptionofhimself”whichgiveshimthehopethathecanrollbacktimeandheneveryieldsuphishope.

Thirdly,AfewholdthatGatsby’sattitudetowardhisfatherandfriendscanreflecthispersonalities.ManWenjing’sGatsby’sDream（2008）pointsoutthatGatsbymustfeellonely.Gatsbyisnottakecareofhisfather,andevenforgethisfatheratall,inotherwords,Gatsbyonlypaysallhisattentiontohisowndream.Thoughhisguestscometohispartyandalwayshavefuntothemidnight,theyseldommakecommunicationwithGatsby,andtherefore,Gatsbyhasnofriendindeed.Whenhedied,noonementiontheGatsbyanymore.

ScholarspayalotofattentionontherelationshipbetweenGatsbyandhisdreaminordertoreflecthispersonalities.Hisdreamisreallyanimportantpartofhislife;however,someotherpartssuchastherelationshipbetweenGatsbyandNickalsocandisplayGatsby’spersonalitiestothereaders.AsforGatsby,Nickishisbestfriend.Therefore,theauthorwillfocusonthefriendshipbetweenGatsbyandNicktoanalyzethepersonalitiesofGatsby.
