HoraintheCzechRepublic,theSedlecOssuary(藏骨堂)neverfailstoinspirefearandfascinationinfirst-timevisitors.Usually,anossuaryisjustasitewherebonesarekept,butthisoneisverydifferent.Itisanossuaryrichlydecoratedwithbonesofmotethan40,000humanskeletons(骨架),astrangefactthatledtoitsnickname—theBoneChurch.

ThecurrentlocationoftheSedlecOssuarywasoriginallyacemetery.In1278,theheadmasterofSedlecpaidavisittotheHolyLand,andonhisreturn,hebroughtbackahandfulofearthfromGolgotha,theareawhereJesusisthoughttohavebeencrucified(钉在十字架上).Theheadmasterspreadthesoilinthecemeteryandwordwentaroundthattheplacewasblessed.Soon,peoplefromalloverEuropewantedtobeburiedthere.Inthe15thcentury,thecemeterywasnearlyoutofplace,sotomakeroomfornewcomers,someoftheolderboneswereremovedfromthecemeteryandstoredinanossuarytheybuilt.Atthetime,however,thebonesweremerelypiledupandnotcarefullyarranged.

ItwasFrantisekRint,awoodcarver,whorearrangedtheburialsiteandtransformeditintothemagnificentBoneChurch.In1870,hecleanedupthousandsofbonesandcarefullypiecedthemtogetherinvariousshapes.Thedesignsincludetwochalices,severalcandleholders,anoblefamilycrest,asplendidchandelier,andmuchmore.Equallyastonishingarethesixbell-shapedpyramidsofbonesinthefourcornersoftheossuary.Together,theyexpresstheshortlifeofhumanbeings.Tothisday,touristscan’thelpbutfeelsmallafteravisittotheBoneChurch.
