Oneobviousreasonisthatit’sjusttwolineslong.Thepoem,whichcanbeunderstoodas“Amanseessomefacesinthesubwayandthinkstheylooklikeflowersonatreebranch,”isanexerciseinshortness.PoundwroteitafterhavingaspiritualexperienceinaParismetro(subway)station.

Originally,theUSpoetthoughthecouldbestdescribehisvisioninapainting.Unfortunately,hewasn’tapainter.Sohewroteathirty-linepoem,whichhedidn’tlike.Hedroppedthelongversioninthewastebin.Sixmonthslater,hewroteashorterpoem,butdidn’tlikethatoneeither.Finally,afullyearaftertheexperience,hehadbeenreadingshortJapanesepoemscalledhaikus,andhefiguredhewouldtrythisstyle.Theresult,whichwaspublishedin1913,isoneofthemostfamousandinfluentialworksinmodernpoetry.

Thispoemisoneofthemonumentsofthe20th-centuryartisticmovementknownas“Imagism”.Basically,Poundandhisfriendsthoughtthatimagesweren’tjustdecoration:

theywerethehighestformofspeech.Byfindingtherightimage,thepoetcanexpressthetrue,spiritualrealityofathing,whichismoreimportantthanusingabunchofadjectivestodescribeitsphysicalappearance.Thus,“InaStationoftheMetro”isapoemthatconsistsofoneimageexpressedwithabsoluteexactnessandnothingelse.
