morethan,otherthan和ratherthan是三个常用的短语，英语学习者感到容易混淆。
下面分别谈谈它们的意思和用法。
一、morethan的本意为“超过”，但具体在句子中其意思多样。
1.morethan后接名词或名词从句，意思为“不只是、不仅仅是”等，相当于notonly。
如：
Heismorethanafriendofmine.他不只我的是一个朋友。
MytriptoBeijingismorethansightseeing.我到北京的旅行不仅仅是观光而已。
2.morethan后接数字，表示“以上、不只”，相当于over。
WehavestudiedEnglishformorethantenyears.我们学英语已经10多年了。
注意morethana与morethanone的区别。
如：
Ittookmemorethanadaytoreadthenovel.我花了一天多的时间读完这部小说。
Ittookmemorethanonedaytoreadthenovel.我花了不止一天的时间读完这部小说。
还要注意，morethanone加单数名词作主语时，其后接的谓语动词形式。
Morethanonestudentwasabsent.不止一个学生缺席。
Morestudentsthanonewereabsent.不止一个学生缺席。
3.morethan后接形容词，表示被修饰的形容词的强烈程度，意思为“非常，十分，不仅仅等”，相当于very。
Hewasmorethanupsetbytheaccident.他为此事故深感不安。
Suchworkrequiresmorethanindomitablewill.这项工作不仅仅需要坚忍不拔的意志。
4.morethan后接副词或分词，表示“简直,十分”，相当于rather。
Thegirlwasmorethanslightlyhurt.这女孩伤得不轻。
Iwasmorethansurprised;
Iwasastonished.我不只是诧异，简直是大吃一惊。
5.morethan后接动词，表示“绰绰有余，大大地，几乎”，相当于nearly。
Itwasamoonlessnight,butthebrilliantstarsmorethanmadeupforthewantofmoonshine.晚来无月，但繁星点点，皎洁明亮，足补月亮之缺而有余。
二、otherthan也有几个意思。
1.表示“除……之外”，相当于except。
如:
HehasnobooksotherthantheBible.除了《圣经》之外，他没有别的书。
HehasvisitedeverycountryinAsiaotherthanJapan.除了没去日本以外，他访问了其它所有亚洲国家。
2.表示“不同于”，相当于differentfrom,多用于否定句或表示否定意义的句子。
Idonotwishhimotherthanheis.我不希望他改变现状。
ThetruthisquiteotherthanwhatIthink.事实真相同我想的完全不同。
3．ratherthan表示“宁可……也不，而不”，相当于morewilling...than;
insteadof，是一种特殊比较句型，多用于书面语。
Heteachesbyexampleratherthanbyprecept.他以身教，而不是言
ratherthan在句中起并列连词的作用，后可接除主语外的各种并列成分，在语气上，前面的是肯定的，后面的是否定的。
有时为了强调，ratherthan可用于句首。
Ratherthancausedtrouble,heleft.他宁可离开，也不愿意惹麻烦。
Ratherthanbeingcriticized,heshouldbepraised.他不该挨批评，应该受到表扬。
另外ratherthan还有一些习语。
（1）ratherbetterthan表示“稍好一些、稍强一些”，相当于somewhatintheexcessof。
Mary’sEnglishlevelisratherbetterthanherhusband’s.玛丽的英语水平比她的丈夫要稍强一些。
（2）ratherthanotherwise表示“不是别的而是……”，相当于notanythingelsebut...。
It’sratherhotthanotherwise.天还是挺热的。
要注意wouldrather...than...的句型，它表示“宁愿……不愿……”，多用于书面语。
I’dratherstayhomethango.我宁愿呆在家里也不愿去。
Shewouldratherhavethesmallonethanthelargeone.她宁愿要小的那个，也不愿要大的。
than之后可接动词原形，若与rather后的动词相同时，通常省略。
4．要注意morethan与more...than...的不同。
more...than常常表示“与其说……不如说……、是……而不是……”注意它强调的是more之后的形容词，而不是than之后的形容词。
如:
Heismorediligentthanclever.与其说他是聪明，倒不如说他是勤奋。
注意notmorethan“不比……更”和nomorethan“同……一样都不……”的不同含义。
notmorethan是一般的比较,照字面理解就可以；
而nomorethan属于“强式否定比较句”。
Heisnoricherthanhisfriend.他和他的朋友都不富。
（两个人都穷）
Heisnotricherthanhisfriend.他不比他的朋友更富些。

5．more...than...还构成了不少习语。
例如：
1）moreoftenthannot意思为“大都、很经常”，相当于atmosttimes。
Everynight,moreoftenthannot,you’dfindmyfatheratthelocalpub.我父亲每晚多半都要去当地的酒吧。
2）morethanonecanhelp意思为“不必要的、过多的”，相当于morethannecessary。
IwillgiveyounomoretroublethanIcanhelp.我一定不过多地麻烦
3）moredeadthanalive意思为“半死不活”，相当于inapoorconditionowingto...。
Itwasn’ttilltheearlyhoursofmorningthatapolicemanfoundherlying,moredeadthanalive,intheparkwhereshehadbeenbeatenup.直到清晨，一个警察才发现她被打得半死不活地躺在公园里。
4）morethananythingelse表示“非常、最”，相当于verymuch,aboveall。
IacceptedthebeerbutwhatIwantedmorethananythingelsewasacupoftea.我接过了啤酒,然而我当时最想喝的是茶。
5）more...thanyoucanshakeastickat表示“数不清”，相当于verymany。
Thereweremoreschoolboysatthefootballmatchthanyoucanshakeastickat.足球赛上的男生多得数也数不清。
6）more...thanmeetstheeye表示“比第一眼看上去更复杂”，相当于morecomplicatedthanitseems。
ThereismoreinMary’srefusalthanmeetstheeye;
Ithinkshe’stryingtohidesomething.玛丽的拒绝另有隐情，我想她是在力图隐瞒什么东西。
7）moretroublethanitisworth意思为“坏处多于好处”，相当于causemoretrouble。
“Whydon’ttheyhavetableshere?
”Patrickasked,“I’mnotsure,butIfancytheyweremoretroublethantheywereworth.”“为什么他们不在这儿摆餐桌呢？
”帕特里克问道。
“我不清楚,不过我看那些餐桌摆在这儿是好处不足，麻烦有余。
”
8）morethanalittle意思为“相当大地”，相当于quite,considerably。
Iwasstillmorethanalittlenervousofmycolleaguesandsuperiorsandveryanxioustoplease.跟同事和上司在一起时，我还是相当紧张的，极力想让他们开心。
能正确理解并恰当使用这三个习语，需要长期留心、学习。
