not;

theylooklikevirtueatadistance,buttheyaredetectedbycloseobservers,

andinthelongrun;

andhenceitisthattheyarepopularlyaccusedofpretense

andhypocrisy,not,Irepeat,fromtheirownfault,butbecausetheirprofessors

andtheiradmirerspersistintakingthemforwhattheyarenot,andareofficious

inarrogatingforthemapraisetowhichtheyhavenoclaim.Quarrythegranite

rockwithrazors,ormoorthevesselwithathreadofsilk,thenmayyouhope

withsuchkeenanddelicateinstrumentsashumanknowledgeandhuman

reasontocontendagainstthosegiants,thepassionandtheprideofman.

Passage2.“Packing”aPerson

Aperson,likeacommodity,needspackaging.Butgoingtoofarisabsolutely

undesirable.Alittleexaggeration,however,doesnoharmwhenitshowsthe

person'

suniquequalitiestotheiradvantage.Todisplaypersonalcharmina

casualandnaturalway,itisimportantforonetohaveaclearknowledgeof

oneself.Amasterpackagerknowshowtointegrateartandnaturewithoutany

tracesofembellishment,sothatthepersonsopackagedisnocommoditybuta

humanbeing,livelyandlovely.Ayoungperson,especiallyafemale,radiant

withbeautyandfulloflife,hasallthefavorgrantedbyGod.Anyattemptto

makeupwouldbeself-defeating.Youth,however,comesandgoesinamoment

ofdoze.Packagingforthemiddle-agedisprimarilytoconcealthefurrows

sexuberanceenoughtoretain

self-confidenceandpursuepioneeringwork,youareuniqueinyournatural

qualities,andyourcharmandgracewillremain.Elderlypeoplearebeautifulif

theirriveroflifehasbeen,throughplains,mountainsandjungles,runningits

courseasitshould.Youhavereallylivedyourlifewhichnowarrivesata

heaventhatsaintsandpoetshaveimagined.ThisiswhatIsought,andthough

itmightseemtoogoodforhumanlife,thisiswhat—atlast—Ihavefound.With

equalpassionIhavesoughtknowledge.Ihavewishedtounderstandthehearts

ofmen.Ihavewishedtoknowwhythestarsshine...Alittleofthis,butnot
