THEAIMSOFTHEMODULE
Thismodulewillbeofvaluetoanyonewhoisstudyingfilmandtelevisionprogrammesandculture,sothattheycanfullyunderstandthefinancialandbusinesscontextinwhichtheseprogrammesarecreated.Itwillalsobeofvaluetoanyonewhoisinterestedineventuallyworkinginthemedia,filmortelevisionorboth.
Unlikesomeotherartforms,filmandtelevisionproductionsareveryinfluencedbythemarketplacesinwhichtheyoperate,andthefinanciersandaudiencesinthosemarkets.Thismodulewillprovideathoroughandpracticalunderstandingoftheprocessesofcreativescriptandprojectdevelopment;
theworkingsofthefilmbusinessandtheTVbusiness;
theinfluenceofthemarket;
andhowproducersdealwiththeorganisationsresponsibleforcommissioningorfinancingfilmsandtelevisionprogrammes.
BytheendofityouwillknowhowfilmsandTVprogrammesgetdreamtup,howtheygetpitched,andhowtheygetfinanced.Andthroughamixtureofcasestudies,roleplay,in-classactivitiesandpracticalassignments,youwilllearnhowtheindustryactuallyworks.
INTENDEDLEARNINGOUTCOMES
a)KnowledgeandUnderstanding.Bytheendofthemodulestudentsshouldhaveasenseoftheprocessofcreativedevelopment;
anunderstandingofthebusinessandmarketforfilmandTV;
andasenseofhowtoapproachthoseresponsibleforcommissioningandfinancingfilmsandprogramming.
b)IntellectualSkills.Applyideasandconceptsinthedevelopmentandproductionfinancingoffilmsandtelevisionprogrammes.
c)ProfessionalSkills.Themodulewilldevelopstudents'
abilitytoselect,siftandsynthesizeinformationfromavarietyofmaterials;
andtheirabilitytodevelopandpitchideas.
d)TransferableSkills.Themodulewillalsodevelopstudents'
abilityto:
∙Managealargeanddisparatebodyofinformation
∙UsearangeofITandothertechnologiesintheproductionoftheirassessedwork
∙Speakandwritecogently.
∙Useteamworkindevelopingcasestudyanswers.
Bythecompletionofthemodulestudentsshouldbeableto:
∙Demonstrateanunderstandingofthecomplexitiesoftheinternationalindependentfilmbusinessandthetelevisionbroadcastandproductionbusiness,includingthedifferenttypesoforganisationsandindividualsoperatingandco-operatingwithinthem(asshownbytherelevantvaluechains).
∙DemonstrateanunderstandingoftheTVmarketplaceandtherequirementsofTVprogrammecommissionerswithinthewidercontextofbroadcasting.
∙Originateandidentifyappropriatetreatment/sforfactualprogrammingappropriatetotargetaudience/s.
∙UnderstandthefilmandTVdevelopmentprocessandthedifferentjobrolesandorganisationsoperatingwithinit.
EMPLOYABILITY:
ApracticalunderstandingofthefinancialandbusinesscontextofthefilmandTVindustryiscentraltothedesignanddeliveryofthismodule.Itwillalsoinvolveavarietyofteachingandlearningmethods,suchassmallandfullgroupdiscussion,presentation,roleplaysandsimulatedpitching,aswellasconventionalseminarteaching.Inadditiontotheacademicskillsthesetechniquesfoster,theyarealsoanopportunitytopracticeanddevelopthekindsofskillsthatstudentsmayneedinemploymentafterthisdegree,whetherinmediaorothersectors.
Employersvaluethecommunicationandsocialskillsfosteredbygroupdiscussion,theabilitytothinkcarefullyandcreativelyaboutbusinessproblems,andtheabilitytoworkindependentlythatisrequiredforpreparedparticipationandtheresearchandmanagementofwrittencoursework.
