Franklinwasbornin1706inBostontoasoapmakernamedJosiahFranklin.Hisfathercouldnotaffordfullschoolingforallhischildren,butBenjaminlovedbooksandworkedinhiselderbrother’sprintingbusinessbeforestartinganewspapercalledthePennsylvaniaGazettein1729.Hewroteanddrewcartoonsforthenewspaper.Inaddition,heworkedtiimprovelivingconditionsinthecity:

introducingstreetlights,cleaningtheroadsandbuildinglibraries.Inthe1740s,Franklinretiredfromhisnewspaperandturnedtosciencewithgreatsuccess.Hewasaverysmartmanandworkonelectricity,includingthe“kiteexperiment”whichconfirmedthenatureoflightning,madehimfamousthroughouttheworld.

Franklinearnedthetitleofthe“FirstAmerican”forhiseffortstounitethe13Americanstats,andtowintheirindependence.ThispartofthestorystartsinLondon.HewassenttothecitytopersuadetheBritishtotreattheAmericanstatesmorefairly.Itwasherethathebeganinteractingwithimportantpoliticalthinkersandactivistsofthetimeanddevelopinghisownpoliticalideas.

FollowinghisreturntoAmericain1761hebecamemuchmoreactiveinAmericanpoliticsandinthebattleagainstBritishrule.

AftertheUnitedStatesofAmericawasestablished,FranklinheldseveralimportantpositionssuchasthefirstUnitedStatesPostmasterGeneral,AmbassadortoFranceandPresidentofPennsylvania.Heisalsofamoustodayforhiswisesayings,including“apennysavedisapennyearned”and“anounceofpreventionisworthapoundofcure”.
