   Asayoungmanhebecameaboxingchampion.WhentheUnitedStatesenteredWorldWarOne,youngJimmyDoolittlejoinedthearmy.Healsoaskedtobetrainedasapilot.OnMarch18th,1918,Jimmypassedthetestsandgraduatedfromflightschool.HehadhopedtogotoFranceandfightinthewar.Thearmy,however,hadhimtrainotherpilots.Whenthewarended,Jimmychosetostayinthearmy.Hethoughtthiswouldgivehimachancetocombinehisflyingskillsandhisinterestinengineering.

   Thereisaspaceinthebasementoftheteachingbuildingwherestudentschatandmeeteachother.Aswedonotalwayshavethesameclassroomsandclassmates,theschoolwantsustogettoknoweachotherthere.Studentsusuallycometoschoolearly,sitinthatspaceandhavefun.Aroundthespace,therearemanylockersforstudentstoleavetheirbooksin,sothatstudentsdonothavetocarryaheavyschoolbageverywhere.

   Itreallysurprisesmethatwehavealmostnotextbooks.WeonlyhavetextbooksforWorldHistoryandAlgebraandtheyarebigandheavy,likebricks.Forotherclasses,weonlyneedbinders(活页夹)withpaperinthem.Withouttextbooks,studentslearnthingsfreelyandactively.Forexample,myhumanitiesteacherjustteachesuswhatisinhermindatthetime.Weneverknowwhatwewilllearn.
