I’maconfidentwriter.I’vebeendoingthislongenoughthatIknowmystrengthsandmylimitations.I’vehadenoughfeedbacktounderstandthatI’maneffectivecommunicator—whenIusethewrittenword.I’mlessconfidentasaspeaker.Idon’thavetimetopausetoformulatemythoughts.I’mnotabletoedit.I’mafraidofbeingtrappedinacornerwithoutbeingabletotalkmywayout.Basically,I’mscaredtospeak.
Itwouldbeeasytosimplyrefusetheopportunitiesthatcomemyway.Whensomebodyasksmetospeakinfrontofagroup,Icouldsay“no”.Whenradioandtelevisionstationscallforaninterview,Icouldsay“no”.Butforthepasttwoyears,I’vebeenfollowingmyownpolicytosay“yes”tonewopportunities(solongastheydon’tviolatemypersonalcodeofconduct).
Tosay“no”istoliveinfear.Mygoalistocontinuallyimprovemyself,tobecomebetterthanIamtoday.Onewaytodothatistodothethingsthatscareme,totakethemonaschallenges,andtolearnfromthem—evenifIfail.

Inmid-November,alocalstationaskedmetoappearonlivetelevision.“Irealizeit’sshortnotice,”theproducerwrote,“butwe’dlovetohaveyouontheshowifyou’reavailabletonight.”
It’sonethingtosaythatyouwanttoovercomeyourfears,butit’sanotherthingtoactuallydoit.Fearisreal.WhenIwasaskedtoappearonlivetelevision,Iwasfrightened.IrememberedmydisastrousinterviewwithaSeattleradiostationinearly2007.IthoughtaboutrecenttapedtelevisioninterviewsthatIhadhated.Iwasafraidofwhatmighthappen.
ButIalsothoughtaboutthethingsthathadgoneright.Ithoughtofhowmyspeakingskillshadimprovedoverthepastyear.Ithoughtaboutmyenthusiasmforfrugalityandpersonalfinance.AndthenIthoughtofthebookIwasareading,abookthatIhadboughtfor$1.29atthelocalthriftstore.
TheMagicofThinkingBigwasahugebestsellerduringthe1960s.WrittenbyDr.DavidSchwartz,aprofessoratGeorgiaStateUniversity,thebookcontainsdozensofpracticalhintsandtips(andmanyanecdotes)toillustratethepoweroftakingriskstoachievebiggoals.Schwartzarguesthatnobodywillbelieveinyouuntilyoubelieveinyourself.
SowhenthetelevisionproduceraskedifIwantedtoappearonhisshow,Ithoughtbig.“Sure,”Isaid.“I’lldoit.”Iactedconfident,butontheinsideIwasfrightened.WhatIneededweretechniquestoboostmyconfidenceandtoovercomemyfear.

Howtobuildconfidenceanddestroyfear
Withoutself-confidence,wehaveatendencytomakepoordecisions.Wemakechoicesbasedonfearinsteadofwhatisbestforus.Ifyoulackconfidence,youmightfillyourlifewithself-destructivebehavior.Youmightworkatajobyouhate.Youmayallowyourselftogetdeepindebt.Youmayfindyourselfmovingfromonebadrelationshiptoanother.Withoutconfidence,youdon’tallowyourselftopursueyourdreams.
InTheMagicofThinkingBig,DavidSchwartzarguesthatallconfidenceisdeveloped.“Nooneisbornwithconfidence,”hewrites.“Thosepeopleyouknowwhoradiateconfidence,whohaveconqueredworry,whoareateaseeverywhereandallthetime,acquiredtheirconfidence,everybitofit.”
Confidenceisbuiltslowly,onesuccessatatime.I’velearnedthatinordertoovercomefear,Ineedtoemployavarietyoftechniques.HereareafewthatI’vepickedovertheyears,andwhichI’veusedtohelpmyselfgetoutofdebt,andtodevelopthecouragetospeakbeforegroupsortoappearonlivetelevision:
·Don’tdwellonfailures.Drawfromthethingsyou’vedoneright.Mytalklastweekwasfarfromperfect.ButifIdwellonthethingsIdidwrong,I’llpsychmyselfoutoffutureopportunities.I’llbescaredtosay“yes”whensomebodyasksmetospeak.Instead,I’mtryingtofocusonthethingsIdidrightsothatIcanemphasizetheminfuturepresentations.
·Rehearseapositiveoutcome.Beforemylivetelevisionappearance,Iwatchedclipsofsimilarinterviewsonthesameshow.(I’mnotaregulartelevisionwatcher,sothiswasnew.)Iarrivedatthestationearly,soIsatinthecar,closedmyeyes,andimaginedtheintervieweraskingmequestionsaboutthesubject.Iimaginedjokingwithher.Iimagineditasapositiveexperience.
·Donotprocrastinate.Procrastinationpromotesfear.Whenyou’reafraid,thinkingisyourenemy.Act.Dowhatyouthinkisbest,anddoitquickly.Thelongeryoutaketoact,themoretimeyouhavetotalkyourselfoutofit,thelongeryouhavetoimaginethethingsthatmightgowrong.It’snotenoughtohope.Takeaction.

·Thinkliketheotherperson.Rememberthatpeopleareallthesame.Weeachhavethesamefearsandthesamedesires.Underneath,mostfolksareprettynice.Whenyou’reinanuncomfortablesituation,putyourselfintheotherperson’sshoes.Whilepreppingformytalklastweek,IusedthistechniquetoplanwhatIwasgoingtosayandhowIwasgoingtosayit.Italkedwithadozenfinancialplannerstofindouttheirconcerns,andtriedtoaddresstheminmytalk.Bydoingthis,IremovedthefearthatIwasn’taddressingtheirinterests.
·Maintainapositivementalattitude.InSuccessThroughaPositiveMentalAttitude,theauthorswrite:
