AndbecamenumberonehimselftwoyearsagowhenIraqwassoviolent,heneverleftthebasewithoutwearingfullbodyarmor.Lastmonth,ashewasabouttorelinquishcommand,heshowedusaverydifferentIraq.

WhenaskedbycorrespondentLesleyStahlwhetherhewaswearingarmorataBaghdadmarket,thegeneraltoldher,"No,I'mnot."

AsGeneralOdiernolooksbackonhistwoyearsascommander,hesaysthatdespitearecentwaveofbombings,thelevelofviolencehascomedownconsiderably.HislastactasthemaninchargewastooverseetheU.S.militarydrawdown,thelargestmovementoftroopsandmaterielsinceWorldWarII.

Itwasalogisticaltourdeforce,involvingover40,000armoredvehicles,jeepsandbulldozers;2.2millionseparateitemshadtobesorted,stackedandpacked,aswellas7,000tonsofammunition.

TheArmy's4thStrykerBrigade,2ndInfantryDivisionwasthelastcombatunittoleave.IttookthemthreedaysandnightstomoveacrosstheborderintoKuwait.

ButmanyIraqiswonderwhattheU.S.occupationaccomplished,asweleavetheircountrywithalitanyofunresolvedissues,nottheleastbeingpoliticaldisarray:

Tocalmthingsdown,OdiernoorganizedteamsofPeshMerga,IraqiandU.S.soldierstomancheckpointstogetherandpatroltheregion.
