JaneEyreisafamousnovelinforeignliteraturehistory.Manypeoplereadthisbookandbegintothinkherromanticlife.Manyscholarshavebeguntorealizethevalueandeffectofherfeministthought.Asweallknown,wecaneasilyfindthemostimportantcharacter—independencefromtheheroineJane’sstruggletosocietyandattitudetolove.JaneEyreisnotonlyalivelyandrealwomanbutalsoarepresentationofnewfemale.Differentpeopleregardherasdifferentrolesfromtheiruniqueangleofview.ThispapermainlydiscussesJaneEyre’scharacterandlifeexperiencefromfeministtheoryandhelpsreadertogettouchwiththesoulofJane.

1.1JaneEyre’sauthor-CharlotteBronte

JaneEyre’sauthoristheBritishnovelistCharlotteBronte.Shewasborninaclericalfamilyin1816.HerfamilysatinasmallvillageofthenorthernEnglandSheisthethirdchildinthefamilyandhastwoyoungersistersandabrother.BrontesistersarethefamousfemalewritersintheBritishliteraturebutCharlotteisthemostpopularamongsisters.Shehasamiserablechildhoodbecausehermotherdiedwhenshewasonlyfiveyearsold.Andherfather’sincomewastoolowtomaintaintheexpenditure.Althoughthelifeofherfamilywasveryhardanddeplorable,shenevergivesupthehopeoflife.Shewassendtotheboardingschoolwithhersisters,butthelifeconditionwassoterriblethatsheandhersisterEmilydecidedtogobackhome.Theyspendtheirchildhoodindesolatemountainousvillage.ThenshewenttoMsWord’sschooltostudyatfifteen.Afewyearslatershebecameateacherinthisschool.Inordertoenlargehereyeshot,shedecidedtobeagovernessinprivatefamily.Butshegaveupthisjobbecauseshecan’tbearthediscriminationfromnoblewomanandricher.CharlotteBrontealsowasagirlwhowantedtostudyandimproveherself.SheandhersisterwenttoItalytostudyFrenchandGermanbyheraunt’shelp.Whenshecamebackhometown,shebegantosetaschoolbyherself.Butnopeoplecametoherschool.Althoughherplanwasfailfinally,shewasdeeplyinfluencedbythestudyexperienceinItalyandbeganherwayonwritten.Evermoreshededicatedallherlifetotheliterature.

1.2JaneEyre’sheroine-JaneEyre

JaneEyreisanovelaboutakind-heartedwomanwhopursuitsfreedomandindependentlove.Sheisauniquefemaleinherera.Jane’sparentsdiedwhenshewasonlyachild.Inordertosurviveshemustlivedwithheraunt.Duringthelifeinheraunt’sfamily,shesufferedfromthemaltreatment.Occasionallyshegotanopportunitytogototheboardingschool.Butthelifeintheschoolwasnothappybecausegirlswereoftenregardedastheinferior.Shestudiedtheresixyears,andthenbecameateacherinthatschool.Shewantedtoexperiencedifferentlifeandmadeanadvertisementonnewspaper.LuckilyshegotajobtobeagovernessinThornfieldandmetherloverMr.EdwardRochester.Janehadawonderfullifethereanddecidedtogetmarriedwithhimfinally.ButbeforetheweddingJanefoundRochesterhadgotmarriedandhiswifestillalive.Withnodoubtthiswasaseriousshockforher.AlthoughMr.Rochesterhadanguish,Janecannotaccepthimanddecidedtoleavehimtoseekthepeaceofherownheart.Thenshesufferedthetribulationandillness.AtthattimeshemetSt.JohnRiverswhohelpedhergetridoftheterriblelife.Theyfoundthattheyarecousinbeforelong.ThiskindandgentlemanwantedtomarrywithJane.ButJanerefusedbecauseshedidn’tlovehimandseekherindependenceandequality.Janegotaconsiderablesumofheritagesurprisinglyfromheruncle.Shecanliveanascendantlife,butshecan’tforgetRochesterandbackedtoThornfield.AlthoughRochesterwasblindandhisarmwasbroken,Janedidn’tgiveuphertruelovetohimanddecidedtogetmarried.Finallytheyhadapeacefulweddingunderequality.FromJane’sbeautifullovestory,wecaneasilyfindherindependentattitudetolife;herself-respecttolove.Theeffectofthisnovelisgreat,becauseJaneisaunfamiliarfemalefigureintheworldliterature.

Janeisagirlwhoearlyexperiencesthecrueltyandmiserablesociety.However,Janestillhasvariousconfidencestothelifeandinnerpower.Likemostpeople,Janealsowantstogetrespectfromotherpeoplearoundherself.Butsheknowsitimpossible.Maybeothergirlsbearthediscriminationwithnowordsandfeelthattheyarerealinferiortomen.Janeisauniquefemaleinthatera.Sheispoorbutaspiring,smallinbodybuthugeinsoul.Althoughtherearedifferencesineconomicalstatusandinappearance,everyoneisequal.DuringthelovebetweenJaneandRochester,sheneverlostherdignityandself-respect.Onthecontrary,shethinkstheyshouldrespecteachother.Jane’sself-respectandself-confidencemakeherhaveaspecialcharmwhichattractsRochester.Theyfallinloveundertheconditionofequality.Whentheypreparedtomarry,sheknewthefactandrefusedtobemistressforhim.Shesaystohim.

Icareformyself.Themoresolitary,themorefriendless,themoreunsustainedIam,themoreIwillrespectmyself.IwillkeepthelawgivenbyGod;sanctionedbyman.IwillholdtotheprinciplesreceivedbymenwhenIwassane,andnotmad-asIamnow,lawsandprinciplesarenotforthetimeswhenthereisnotemptation:

theyareforsuchmomentsasthis,whenbodyandsoulriseinmutinyagainsttheirrigor;stringentarethey;inviolatetheyshallbe.IfatmyindividualconvenienceImightbreakthem,whatwouldbetheirworth?

Preconceivedopinions,foregonedeterminations,areallIhaveatthishourtostandby:

AlthoughJanelovesRochestersincerely,shecannotbeartobeadoll.Finallyshechoosesarationaldeterminationtopersistherself-respect.Inheropinions,independenceismoreimportantthanbeautifulloveandrichlife.Wecanseeitfromtheendingofnovel.WhenRochesterisdisabled,shedidn’tabandonhim.Jane’sdifferentbehaviortellsusthatsheisastrongwoman,ashortandsmallwoman,havingstrongself-respect.Shepursuesakindofbright,sincereandbeautifullifeunswerving.Janeeverclaimedherearnestwhoop:
