Itishardformetoacceptthatmanyofmywonderfulneighborsarcgrowingoldandwon'tbearoundmuchlonger.Ihavefondmemoriesofthecoupleacrossthestreet,whosattogetherontheirporchswingalmosteveryevening,thewidownextdoorwhoyelledatmybrotherandmeforbeingtooloud,andthecrazyoldmaninablacksuitwhodroveanoldcar.Incontrasttothosepeople,thepeopleIseetodayareveryoldneighborswhohaveseenbetterdays.Themanintheblacksuitsayshewantstodie,andanotherneighborjustsoldhishouseandmovedintoanursinghome.Theladywhousedtoyellatusistootiredtobotheranymore,andthecoupleacrossthestreetrarelygoouttotheirfrontporchthesedays.ItisdifficulttowatchthesepreciouspeopleastheyneartheendoftheirlivesbecauseatonetimeIthoughttheywouldliveforever.

The“comingsandgoings”oftheyoungergenerationofmystreetarenowmostly“going”asfriendsandpeersmoveon.Onceuponatime,mylifeandthelivesofmypeersrevolvearoundhome.Theboundaryofourworldwasthegutterattheendofthestreet.Wegotpleasurefromplayingnightgames,orfromabreathtakingrideonabicycle.Thingsaredifferentnow,asmyfriendsbecomeadultsandmoveon.Childrenwhorodetricyclesnowdrivecars.Thekidswhoonceplayedwithmenowhavenewinterestsandvaluesastheygotheirseparateways.Somehavegoneawaytocollege,afewgotmarried,twowentintothearmy,andonewenttoprison.Watchingallthesepeoplegrowupandgoawayonlymakesmelongforthegoodolddays.

Perhapsthebiggestchangeonmystreetisthefactthatthecityisgoingtoturnmyprecioushillintoseverallotsfornewhomes.Forsixteenyears,theviewoutofmykitchenwindowhasbeenaviewofthathill.Thehillwasafundamentalpartofmychildhoodlife;itwasthehubofsocialactivityforthechildrenofmystreet.Wespenthourstherebuildingforts,sledding,andplayingtag.Theviewoutofmykitchenwindownowisverydifferent;itisoneoftractorsanddumptruckstearingupthehill.Whenthehillgoes,theneighborhoodwillnotbethesame.Itisapieceofmychildhood.Itisavisualreminderofbeingakid.Withoutthehill,mystreetwillbejustanotherpeainthepod.

Therewasatimewhenmystreetwasmyworld,andIthoughtmyworldwouldneverchange.Butsomethinghappened.Peoplegrowup,andpeoplegrowold.Placeschange,andwiththechangecomestheheartacheofknowingIcannevergobacktothetimesIloved.Inayearorso,Iwillbegonejustlikemanyofmyneighbors.Iwillalwayslookbacktomyyearsasachild,buttheplaceIrememberwillnotbethesilentstreetwhosepeaceisinterruptedbythesoundsofconstruction.Itwillbethehappy,noisy,somewhatstrange,butwonderfulstreetIknewasachild.
