Bytheyoungageofsixteen,MaryCassatthaddecidedshewantedtobeeanartist.Unliketheotherwomenpaintersofthetime,shedidnotwanttobemerelyanamateur(爱好者)—shewantedtomakealivingwithherart.From1860to1862,MarystudieddrawingatthePennsylvaniaAcademyofFineArts,whichwasnearherhome.Whatshereallywantedtodo,however,wasgotoEuropetostudytheworksoffamouspainters,knownasthe“oldmasters”.

Atfirst,Mary’sparentswereopposedtotheideaofhergoingtoEurope,butsheeventuallychangedtheirminds.MarymovedtoPariswhenshewas22yearsold.Afterstudyingtheoldmastersforawhile,shebegantobelievethatifshewastobeeagoodartist,shewouldhavetodevelopherownstyle.

Intheearly1870s,thepainterEdgarDegasaskedMarytojointhegroupcalledtheImpressionists.TheImpressionistswereagroupofpainterswhohadbrokenfromthestyleoftheoldmasters.Ratherthanpaintingonlysittingorstandingmodels,theImpressionistsoftenpaintedfromreallife.Ratherthanpaintinginonlydarkcolors,theImpressionistsexperimentedwithbrightcolorsandtheeffectoflightoncolor.
