Inrecentyears,fluvaccineshavebeenbasedonHINI,H3N2andeitheroneortwotypesofinfluenzaBvirus.Eachofthesehasa“reference”type,whichisusedtomakeseedvirus.Producersinjecttheseedtypesintoeggsandincubate（孵）themasthevirusgrows.Thentheypurifythevirus,andeitherweakenitorkillittomakeavaccine.

Usingeggsisatrickyandunpredictableprocess.Sometimesthevirusdoesn’tgrowwellineggs,whichcanmeanlessvaccinethanexpected.Theresultisafluvaccinethatdoesn’toffermuchprotection.“Aslongaswehaveeggswearegoingtohavethisproblem,”saidScottHensley,afluvirusexpert,“Theonlysolutionisnottodependoneggs.”
