Abstract
JaneEyreandTessarethetwoimagesofwomenthatmanypeoplehavealwaysbeenconcernedabout.Thedifferentfateofthesetwowomentouchedreadersdeeply.Bothofthemexperiencedpains,suffering,resistanceandthepursuitofspiritualfreedombutthefateofthemaredifferentdramatically.Onestartedanewlifebystrugglingagainstherdestiny,whiletheotherwasdestroyedbylifeeventually.Thisthesiswilldescribethetwoimagesfromtherespectofpersonality,love,rebellionconsciousness,lifebackground,andstruggleanddifferentattitudestofate,whichrevealtherootsthatleadtotheirdifferentfate,aswellastoattractthereadertofeelthehardshipanddifficultyforwomentostruggleforindependenceinthelife.

摘要
简爱和苔丝一直都是人们非常关注的两个女性形象,两个人不同的命运深深地吸引着读者,她们同样经历了痛苦、磨难、反抗和追求的心灵历程,但最终的命运却是截然不同的。
一个在与命运的抗争中获得了新生,另一个则在不断的挣扎中遭到毁灭。
本文从人物个性、爱情观念、反叛意识、生活背景、反抗方式以及对待命运的不同态度六个方面对两个女主人进行了讨论,以此来揭示造成她们不同命运的根源,同时也让读者感受到广大女性在争取人格独立,进行不懈斗争过程中的艰难困苦。

PartOneIntroduction
JaneEyreisoneofCharloteBronte’scharacterswhofearsnotpowerandoppression,andpursuitofpersonalequalityandindependence.TessisafemalewhopursuitsequalityandfreedominThomasHardy’snovel“TessofD’Urbervilles”.JaneEyreisanewimageofwomanwithindependentpersonalityandnewideas.Asanorphan,JaneEyrelivedinheraunt’shomewhenshewasachild;shesufferedalotfromherauntandcousins.Later,shewassenttoaboardingschool,andexperiencedeightyearspurgatorylife.Indomitablewillandtenacitylethertryherbesttostruggleandgrowup.ThoughshewasonlyahumblefamilyteacherinThornfield,shedefendedherdignityandfreedomtenaciously.Facedtheproudandarrogantowner,shewasneitheroverbearingnorservile,andsheneverpleasedthemasterbecauseofherhumblestatus.Thoughinahumblestatus,sheneverhasbeentrampled,buthasbeenrespected,lovedandtrustedbyhermaster,shefeltluckyandhappy.AfterfallinginlovewithRochester,JaneEyrewasawarethatherlovetoRochestertookupallofhermind,andshewaswillingtodedicateeverythingtohim.Whenabigfireoccurred,andledtoRochester’sblindness,disabilityoflegsandfeet,shecamebacktolivewithhimbecauseshelovedhimstronglyandpersistently.Finallyshegainedtrueloveandhappiness.
Tess,asapoorruralworkingwoman,isThomasHardyshapedanidealfarmgirl.Herfamilywaspoor,butshewaskind,beautifulandnoble.HumblebirthdeterminedthemiserablefateofTess,butthehardlivingconditionsdidnotpreventherfromstruggling.Tesswasnotwillingtoendureoppression;shestruggledwiththefeudalandbourgeoismoral,legal,religiousandsocialenvironmentfrombeginningtoend.FacedthewealthyyoungmasterAlec,shedidnotwanttobehisplaythinganddesperatelystruggledwithhim,thenshedecidedtoleaveTrantridgeandbackhome.AlltheseshowtheunyieldingandnoblecharacterofTess.Meanwhile,Tessdespisedreligion,criticizedthehypocrisyofthesociallife,regardlessofthereligiousrules,sheaskedthepastortodobaptismtoherillegitimatechild,Inthelate19thcentury,theBritishchurchandlawprescribed:
“Prohibitthemenfromgetmarriedtothedeadwife’ssister”,butTessaskedherhusbandmarriedherownsisterafterherdead,shedidnotcompromiseonreligion,evenherfaceddeath.ThevillageofMarlott,whereitwasTess’shome,locatedintheuncivilizedpoorarea,Tesslostherchastityandwaspregnantsoshehadtosuffersomecriticismfromtheforcesoftradition.However,Tesswasnotwillingtodefeatedbylife,soshedecidedtoleavehome,wenttoadairycalledTalbothadytowork,shealsofoundhertruelovethere.AfterencounteringwithClaire,likeJaneEyre,shededicatedallherownbodyandmindtoClairewithoutanyreservation.Attheweddingnight,Tesswasquietunusuallywhenshewasaccusedbyherhusbandaftershetoldhimthatshewasinsulted,whichmakesClairefeltfear.Atthelastofthestory,Claireforgaveherafteralongtimethoughtandcamebacktofindher,shechosetokillAlectopursuethetruelove.However,Tessalsohasalotofweaknessinher,andthisresultedinthatsheendedherownlifeintragedyattheendafterexperiencingalotofsufferingandstruggle.

2.1TheSamePersonalityTraits
TheimageofJaneEyrewasseenasanewembodimentofwoman.Thecharacter’sself-esteem,self-sustainingaccompaniedherallthewaytogrowup.JaneEyrewasfosteredinheraunt’shome.Thoughyoung,shealreadyhadarequirementofself-germinationandequality,evenifthisrequirement’sperformancewasonlywishnottobebulliedforyoungJaneEyre.However,JaneEyrehadexpressedhervoicebysomeconcreteactions,shesentastrongcryandaskedinherheart:
“WhywasIalwayssuffering,alwaysbrowbeaten,alwaysaccused,forevencondemned?
WhycouldIneverplease?
Whywasituselesstotrytowinanyone’sfavor?
”“Unjust!
–Unjust!
”(Bronte,2001:
13-14).Subsequently,JaneEyrehasbecomemoreandmorematureandindependenceafterexperiencingthedifficultlifeinthecruelboardingschool.WhenJaneEyrecametoThornfield,asafamilyteacher,shesaidclearly:
“Ishouldnevermistakeinformalityforinsolence:
oneIratherlike,theothernothingfree—bornwouldsubmitto,evenforasalary”(Bronte,2001:
1950).Thesefirmlywordsvividlyreflectedherpursuitofself-esteem.
SomepeoplethinkthatTess,thefarmgirl,wasmorepatienceandsacrificecomparedwithJaneEyrebecausetheylivedindifferentenvironmentandhaddifferenteducation.Admittedly,theeventofgoingtoD’UrbervillestorecognizeherrelativechangedthefateofTess,andmadeherlostallfreedom.ThenTesshadtoendureallinjustice,however,Tess’sbrilliantcharacter---perseverancewasrevealedthroughherforbear.Asoneoftheworkingclasses,shealwaysmaintainthenatureofsimple,hard-workingandkind,shehateherparents’vulgarandcontemptunwarrantednoblebirth,andshewasalwaysself-reliant,areallthesenotTess’sself-esteem,selfsupportingacts?
WhenTess’sparentsknewthatso-callednobleidentityoftheirandletTesswenttoAlecD’Urbervilles’homerecognizedtherelative,evenhopedthatshewouldmarriedintotheD’Urbervilles,Tessopposedsoresolutelyandsaid:
“Iwouldnotliketodothat”,“Ifthereissuchalady,itwouldbeenoughtobefriendly.Wecan’texpecthelpfromher.”(Hardy,1997:
25)Inthesocietywhereclassideologydominates,itseemsthatmanypoorandlow-classwomenhopedtohaveanopportunitytomarryintothewealthyfamilytoleadacomfortablelife.However,Tesswassopurethatshehadneverthoughtofrelayingonkinshiptodealwiththedifficultiesoflife.Hardfarming,self-reliantlifewashardforher,butitwasfreeandcomfortable.BeautifulTesscoulddependonwealthyoungmasterwithherappearance,butthestrongself-esteem,aswellastheindependentpersonality,madeherstrugglewiththeevilAlectotrytomakethesocialaccepther.Thefictiongivesusagirlwhowasstrongandhard-working,whocouldwalk25milesaday.WhenworkinginTalbothady,shedealwithsomerecalcitrantcowslikemen,andthrowsomebundlesofwheatintothemachinesinthefarm.Alloftheseheavyworkcouldnotcrushedher,evenwhensomepeoplelaughedather,Tessstillrepliedstrongly:
“Thisisaworkwithoutfixsalary,IcouldgettheamountofmoneydependedonhowmanythingswhichthatIdo,soIdidmuchorlesswithoutanyrelationwithyou”(Hardy,1997:
249),whichshowedreadersanewimageofwomanwhoisstrongandindependent.
