7、een concerned about. The different fate of these two women touched readers deeply. Both of them experienced pains, suffering, resistance and the pursuit of spiritual freedom but the fate of them are different dramatically. One started a new life by struggling against her destiny, while the other was
8、 destroyed by life eventually. This thesis will describe the two images from the respect of personality, love, rebellion consciousness, life background, and struggle and different attitudes to fate, which reveal the roots that lead to their different fate, as well as to attract the reader to feel th
9、e hardship and difficulty for women to struggle for independence in the life. Tess is a female who pursuits equality and f
11、reedom in Thomas Hardys novel “Tess of DUrbervilles”. Jane Eyre is a new image of woman with independent personality and new ideas. As an orphan, Jane Eyre lived in her aunts home when she was a child; she suffered a lot from her aunt and cousins. Later, she was sent to a boarding school, and experi
12、enced eight years purgatory life. Indomitable will and tenacity let her try her best to struggle and grow up. Though she was only a humble family teacher in Thornfield, she defended her dignity and freedom tenaciously. Faced the proud and arrogant owner, she was neither overbearing nor servile, and
13、she never pleased the master because of her humble status. Though in a humble status, she never has been trampled, but has been respected, loved and trusted by her master, she felt lucky and happy. After falling in love with Rochester, Jane Eyre was aware that her love to Rochester took up all of he
14、r mind, and she was willing to dedicate everything to him. When a big fire occurred, and led to Rochesters blindness, disability of legs and feet, she came back to live with him because she loved him strongly and persistently. Finally she gained true love and happiness.Tess, as a poor rural working
15、woman, is Thomas Hardy shaped an ideal farm girl. Her family was poor, but she was kind, beautiful and noble. Humble birth determined the miserable fate of Tess, but the hard living conditions did not prevent her from struggling. Tess was not willing to endure oppression; she struggled with the feud
16、al and bourgeois moral, legal, religious and social environment from beginning to end. Faced the wealthy young master Alec, she did not want to be his plaything and desperately struggled with him, then she decided to leave Trantridge and back home. All these show the unyielding and noble character o
17、f Tess. Meanwhile, Tess despised religion, criticized the hypocrisy of the social life, regardless of the religious rules, she asked the pastor to do baptism to her illegitimate child, In the late 19th century, the British church and law prescribed:“Prohibit the men from get married to the dead wife
18、s sister”, but Tess asked her husband married her own sister after her dead, she did not compromise on religion, even her faced death. The village of Marlott, where it was Tesss home, located in the uncivilized poor area, Tess lost her chastity and was pregnant so she had to suffer some criticism fr
19、om the forces of tradition. However, Tess was not willing to defeated by life, so she decided to leave home, went to a dairy called Talbothady to work, she also found her true love there. After encountering with Claire, like Jane Eyre, she dedicated all her own body and mind to Claire without any re
20、servation. At the wedding night, Tess was quiet unusually when she was accused by her husband after she told him that she was insulted, which makes Claire felt fear. At the last of the story, Claire forgave her after a long time thought and came back to find her, she chose to kill Alec to pursue the
21、 true love. However, Tess also has a lot of weakness in her, and this resulted in that she ended her own life in tragedy at the end after experiencing a lot of suffering and struggle.Part Two The Similarities between Jane Eyre and Tess2.1 The Same Personality Traits The image of Jane Eyre was seen a
22、s a new embodiment of woman. The characters self-esteem, self-sustaining accompanied her all the way to grow up. Jane Eyre was fostered in her aunts home. Though young, she already had a requirement of self-germination and equality, even if this requirements performance was only wish not to be bulli
23、ed for young Jane Eyre. However, Jane Eyre had expressed her voice by some concrete actions, she sent a strong cry and asked in her heart: “Why was I always suffering, always browbeaten, always accused, for even condemned? Why could I never please? Why was it useless to try to win any ones favor?” “
24、Unjust! Unjust!”(Bronte, 2001:13-14).Subsequently, Jane Eyre has become more and more mature and independence after experiencing the difficult life in the cruel boarding school. When Jane Eyre came to Thornfield, as a family teacher, she said clearly: “I should never mistake informality for insolenc
25、e: one I rather like, the other nothing freeborn would submit to, even for a salary” (Bronte, 2001: 1950). These firmly words vividly reflected her pursuit of self-esteem.Some people think that Tess, the farm girl, was more patience and sacrifice compared with Jane Eyre because they lived in differe
26、nt environment and had different education. Admittedly, the event of going to DUrbervilles to recognize her relative changed the fate of Tess, and made her lost all freedom. Then Tess had to endure all injustice, however, Tesss brilliant character-perseverance was revealed through her forbear. As on
27、e of the working classes, she always maintain the nature of simple, hard-working and kind, she hate her parents vulgar and contempt unwarranted noble birth, and she was always self- reliant, are all these not Tesss self-esteem, self supporting acts? When Tesss parents knew that so-called noble ident
28、ity of their and let Tess went to Alec DUrbervilles home recognized the relative, even hoped that she would married into the DUrbervilles, Tess opposed so resolutely and said: “I would not like to do that”, “If there is such a lady, it would be enough to be friendly. We cant expect help from her.”(H
29、ardy,1997:25)In the society where class ideology dominates, it seems that many poor and low-class women hoped to have an opportunity to marry into the wealthy family to lead a comfortable life. However, Tess was so pure that she had never thought of relaying on kinship to deal with the difficulties
30、of life. Hard farming, self-reliant life was hard for her, but it was free and comfortable. Beautiful Tess could depend on wealth young master with her appearance, but the strong self-esteem, as well as the independent personality, made her struggle with the evil Alec to try to make the social accep
31、t her. The fiction gives us a girl who was strong and hard-working, who could walk 25 miles a day. When working in Talbothady, she deal with some recalcitrant cows like men, and throw some bundles of wheat into the machines in the farm. All of these heavy work could not crushed her, even when some p
32、eople laughed at her, Tess still replied strongly: “This is a work without fix salary, I could get the amount of money depended on how many things which that I do, so I did much or less without any relation with you”(Hardy,1997:249), which showed readers a new image of woman who is strong and independent.2.2 The Same Attitude to Love and Marriage Love i
