ThekeywordsoftheOxford3000havebeencarefullyselectedbyagroupoflanguageexpertsandexperiencedteachersasthewordswhichshouldreceivepriorityinvocabularystudybecauseoftheirimportanceandusefulness.Theselectionisbasedonthreecriteria.
ThewordswhichoccurmostfrequentlyinEnglishareincluded,basedontheinformationintheBritishNationalCorpusandtheOxfordCorpusCollection.(Acorpusisanelectronicallyheldcollectionofwrittenorspokentexts,oftenconsistingofhundredsofmillionsofwords.)However,beingfrequentinthecorpusaloneisnotenoughforawordtoqualifyasakeyword:
itmaybethatthewordisusedveryfrequently,butonlyinanarrowlydefinedarea,suchasnewspapersorscientificarticles.Inordertoavoidincludingtheserestrictedwords,weincludeaskeywordsonlythosewordswhicharefrequentacrossarangeofdifferenttypesoftext.Inotherwords,keywordsarebothfrequentandusedinavarietyofcontexts.Inaddition,thelistincludessomeveryimportantwordswhichhappennottobeusedfrequently,eventhoughtheyareveryfamiliartomostusersofEnglish.Theseinclude,forexample,wordsforpartsofthebody,wordsusedintravel,andwordswhichareusefulforexplainingwhatyoumeanwhenyoudonotknowtheexactwordforsomething.Thesewordswereidentifiedbyconsultingapanelofoverseventyexpertsinthefieldsofteachingandlanguagestudy.
ThewordsoftheOxford3000areshowninthemainsectionofthedictionarywithaprecedingkeysymbol(
