Ateachercaneasilyforgetwhatit’slikeforastudenttoencounteraclassicalartsuchasoperaforthefirsttime.It'sanexperiencethatcanbeoverwhelmingandbewildering.TheCalPerformancespresentationofThePeonyPavilion—seenontwoofthethreedays,FridayandSunday,ofthenine-hourseriesatZellerbachHallinBerkeley—putmepreciselyinthatneophyteposition.Iwillnothavetotrytorememberwhatitfeelsliketobeoverwhelmedforalongtime.Thebeautyofthisproduction,bytheSuzhouKunOperaTheatreofJiangsu,isthatyouareenvelopedinaprofusionofmeticulouslycoordinateddetails,ratherthanbludgeonedbysizeandspectacle.

PeonyPavilion’ssuccessrestsontheuniversalfoundationofallgreatclassictheater:

agreatstory,toldbyamasterstoryteller.Writtenin1598,TangXianzuelaboratedastorywithobviousfolktalerootsintoavividfrescoinvolvingseveralsubplotsandcharactersfromallclassesofChinesesociety.Tang’sbreadthofvisionandsenseofstructurewastrulyShakespearean.

Reducedtobareessentials,Peonyisaboutagovernor’sdaughter,DuLiniang,whofallsasleepinagardenandmeetsthemanofherdreams.Inherdream,theymakeloveinthegarden’speonypavilion.Uponwaking,DuLiniangtriestorecallthetracesofthedream,buthersearchfortheyoungmanisfruitless.Shepinesandwastesaway.Butbeforeshedies,shepaintsherportraitandinscribesitwithapoemtoherunknownlover,andrequeststhatitbehiddennexttohergraveunderthegarden’splumtree.

Afterherdeath,thejudgeofhellisimpressedbyherbeautyandherstory,andheordersherrelease.Meanwhile,DuLiniang’sbetrothed,thescholarLiuMengmei,isonhiswaytotakecivilserviceexamsinthecapital.HestopsbyDuLiniang’sshrine,recoverstheportraitanddiscoversthathisdreamgirlisnowwanderingaboutasaghost.Thisconditiondoesnotpreventthetwofrommakingrefinedlove,apparentlyprotectingthegirl’svirginity.(No,don’ttrythisathome.)LiuMengmeifinallydecidestoopenthegraveand,withthehelpoftheFlowerGod,DuLiniang’ssoulreturnstoherbody.Reunitedintheflesh,theygetmarriedandlookforwardtoahappyending—although,theyhavealotofexplainingtodoalongtheway.

Alovestory,socialcommentary,comictwists

TangusedthisstorytocriticizeConfucianorthodoxy.Intheplayheinsiststhathumanpassions—includingsexuality—shapehumanrelationsanddestinies,ratherthanrationalityandideasofsocialpropriety.Andso,ratherthanalover’stragedy,àlaRomeoandJuliet,Tang’soperamovesconsistentlyandpowerfullyintosocialcomedy.

Theendingissentimentalandromantic,asthechorussings,"Donotbreakvowswithlonginghearts/Onthethrice-bornpathofdestinytothepavilionofpeonies."Butitisalsoterriblyfunny.LiuMengmeiseeksouthisfather-in-law,DuBao,whothinkshisdaughtertobedeadandnaturallyfindsitdifficulttobelievethatshecouldhaveahusband.LiuMengmeiexpectstheoldermantobelievehimbecauseheknowshimselftobehonest.So,heblurtsouthiswholeincredibletale,leadingDuBaotoconcludethattheyoungmanisoneeggrollshortofacombinationplate.

Theconflictoverwhichrealityis,well,reality,pervadestheentireopera,andtiestogetherallthemajorcharactersandthemes.Thecomicpinnacleisreachedwhen,inatrialbeforetheEmperor,DuBaorefusestobelievehisowneyesandinsiststhathisdaughtermustbeaghost.DuBaofretsoverConfucianmattersofetiquette:

LiuMengmei’sself-assuranceseemstohimlikeanupstart’sarrogance.Andwhatabouthispositionasfather?

Doesn’thehavetogivehisconsenttohisdaughter’swedding?

Howcouldthelovershaveobservedallthecorrectmarriageceremonieswithbothsetsofparentsabsent?

Eventually,DuBaobendsbeforetheEmperor’svindicationofthelovers.Andultimately,hisacquiescencecomesoutofloveforhisresurrecteddaughter,whichweseeintheirdelayedbutemotionalreunion.Asusualinclassiccomedy,loveconquersall.

Inbeautifultranslation

PaiHsien-yung’sadaptationofthe55scenesand20hoursofThePeonyPavilion—whichreducedtheoriginalshowbymorethanhalf—gottotheheartofthematter.Hekeptthemainstorygoingwhilenotsacrificingtherichnessofincidentandcharacterthatmakethepiecesovibrant.LindyLiMark’seasy-to-follow,economicaltranslation,projectedonsidescreens,kepttheaudienceintheloop.

Paisubtitledhisadaptationthe"YoungLovers’Edition,"inreferencetohismajorcreativedecisiontocastage-appropriateactorsinthemainroles.Andindeed,ShenFeng-Ying(asDuLiniang)andYuJiu-Lin(asthescholarLiu)areextremelygoodlookingandbelievable.Butonceyou’veseenwhattheactorsarerequiredtodointhisopera,youcanunderstandwhycastingthemwassuchaleapoffaith.Theirachievementwasnothingshortofastonishing.

ActorsYuJiu-LinandShenFeng-Ying

Tobeginwith,therewerethecostumesleeves:

Bothleadshadsleevesthatweretwofeetlongerthantheirarms.Whenletdown,thesleevesfunctionedasanexpressiveextension.Forexample,thelovers’embraceswereaccomplishedbydrapingthesleevesaroundeachother,whichpreservedadancelikegrace.(Everyonewhohasbeenonstageknowsthatchoreographingakissisamessybusiness.)Thistechnquepreventedwhatmighthavebeenavisuallyuninterestingclinch.

Atanotherpoint,Shenusedhersleevetowipeatear,butnotcontentwiththat,shethenflickeditawayinasinglemovement.Here’stheincrediblepart:

WhenShenandYuneededtousetheirhands,theyrolleduptheirsleeveswithafewdiscreetwristmotionssothatthesleevesbecameordinarycuffsontheirgowns.Itwaslikeamagictrick.

Arrestingchoreography,unusualsounds

Theoperaemploysawealthofdistincthandandheadgestures,eachconventionallyassociatedwithconversationandemotion.Thesehadtoberenderedwiththesameprecisionandnaturalnessasthesleevegestures,evenastherestoftheactor’sbodywasinmotion.IfShenwasgoingtomakeanimportantcross,firstshewouldleanherbodyinthedirectionshewasgoing,tocreateapictureofvisualmomentumbeforemovingherfeet.Inthemiddleofthefirstevening’sperformance,whenShendeliveredDuLiniang’ssearchingmonologue,shespentthebetterpartof15minutesinmotion.Oh,andshewassingingtheentiretime.

Therewasalsoastylisticcontinuumbetweenspeechandsong,withseveralgradationsdependingonthecharacter’ssocialclass.Inthebeginning,itwasdifficulttoadjusttoYu’sspeechbecausehefrequentlyemployedfalsetto.Butwewerequicklycaughtupinhisforcefulcharacterization.Shen,Yu,andtheentirecastseamlesslycombinedthemovementandvocalaspectsoftheirroles.

ThesignaturesoundofChineseoperasingingisextraordinarilydifficulttoproduce(aswithallclassicalsinging).LikeHandel’sarias,thesongsofThePeonyPavilionoftenlingeredforalongtimeoverasingletextualphrase.Thesinger’sbreathcontrolhadtobeperfect.Tohelp,afluteaccompaniedallthevocallines.StrengthenedbyZhouYouliang’ssumptuousorchestration,thelyricismofthemajorariaswasbeautifullyrealized.OnceIadjustedtothevocalstyle,Iwasabletoattendtotheshiftingemotionalcharacterofthemusic.Bythethirdnight,asPaihadpromised,Ididn’twantittoend.
