PeonyPavilion’ssuccessrestsontheuniversalfoundationofallgreatclassictheater:

agreatstory,toldbyamasterstoryteller.Writtenin1598,TangXianzuelaboratedastorywithobviousfolktalerootsintoavividfrescoinvolvingseveralsubplotsandcharactersfromallclassesofChinesesociety.Tang’sbreadthofvisionandsenseofstructurewastrulyShakespearean.

Reducedtobareessentials,Peonyisaboutagovernor’sdaughter,DuLiniang,whofallsasleepinagardenandmeetsthemanofherdreams.Inherdream,theymakeloveinthegarden’speonypavilion.Uponwaking,DuLiniangtriestorecallthetracesofthedream,buthersearchfortheyoungmanisfruitless.Shepinesandwastesaway.Butbeforeshedies,shepaintsherportraitandinscribesitwithapoemtoherunknownlover,andrequeststhatitbehiddennexttohergraveunderthegarden’splumtree.

Afterherdeath,thejudgeofhellisimpressedbyherbeautyandherstory,andheordersherrelease.Meanwhile,DuLiniang’sbetrothed,thescholarLiuMengmei,isonhiswaytotakecivilserviceexamsinthecapital.HestopsbyDuLiniang’sshrine,recoverstheportraitanddiscoversthathisdreamgirlisnowwanderingaboutasaghost.Thisconditiondoesnotpreventthetwofrommakingrefinedlove,apparentlyprotectingthegirl’svirginity.（No,don’ttrythisathome.）LiuMengmeifinallydecidestoopenthegraveand,withthehelpoftheFlowerGod,DuLiniang’ssoulreturnstoherbody.Reunitedintheflesh,theygetmarriedandlookforwardtoahappyending—although,theyhavealotofexplainingtodoalongtheway.

Theendingissentimentalandromantic,asthechorussings,"Donotbreakvowswithlonginghearts/Onthethrice-bornpathofdestinytothepavilionofpeonies."Butitisalsoterriblyfunny.LiuMengmeiseeksouthisfather-in-law,DuBao,whothinkshisdaughtertobedeadandnaturallyfindsitdifficulttobelievethatshecouldhaveahusband.LiuMengmeiexpectstheoldermantobelievehimbecauseheknowshimselftobehonest.So,heblurtsouthiswholeincredibletale,leadingDuBaotoconcludethattheyoungmanisoneeggrollshortofacombinationplate.

Theconflictoverwhichrealityis,well,reality,pervadestheentireopera,andtiestogetherallthemajorcharactersandthemes.Thecomicpinnacleisreachedwhen,inatrialbeforetheEmperor,DuBaorefusestobelievehisowneyesandinsiststhathisdaughtermustbeaghost.DuBaofretsoverConfucianmattersofetiquette:

PaiHsien-yung’sadaptationofthe55scenesand20hoursofThePeonyPavilion—whichreducedtheoriginalshowbymorethanhalf—gottotheheartofthematter.Hekeptthemainstorygoingwhilenotsacrificingtherichnessofincidentandcharacterthatmakethepiecesovibrant.LindyLiMark’seasy-to-follow,economicaltranslation,projectedonsidescreens,kepttheaudienceintheloop.

Paisubtitledhisadaptationthe"YoungLovers’Edition,"inreferencetohismajorcreativedecisiontocastage-appropriateactorsinthemainroles.Andindeed,ShenFeng-Ying（asDuLiniang）andYuJiu-Lin（asthescholarLiu）areextremelygoodlookingandbelievable.Butonceyou’veseenwhattheactorsarerequiredtodointhisopera,youcanunderstandwhycastingthemwassuchaleapoffaith.Theirachievementwasnothingshortofastonishing.

Tobeginwith,therewerethecostumesleeves:

Bothleadshadsleevesthatweretwofeetlongerthantheirarms.Whenletdown,thesleevesfunctionedasanexpressiveextension.Forexample,thelovers’embraceswereaccomplishedbydrapingthesleevesaroundeachother,whichpreservedadancelikegrace.（Everyonewhohasbeenonstageknowsthatchoreographingakissisamessybusiness.）Thistechnquepreventedwhatmighthavebeenavisuallyuninterestingclinch.

Atanotherpoint,Shenusedhersleevetowipeatear,butnotcontentwiththat,shethenflickeditawayinasinglemovement.Here’stheincrediblepart:

WhenShenandYuneededtousetheirhands,theyrolleduptheirsleeveswithafewdiscreetwristmotionssothatthesleevesbecameordinarycuffsontheirgowns.Itwaslikeamagictrick.

Arrestingchoreography,unusualsounds

Theoperaemploysawealthofdistincthandandheadgestures,eachconventionallyassociatedwithconversationandemotion.Thesehadtoberenderedwiththesameprecisionandnaturalnessasthesleevegestures,evenastherestoftheactor’sbodywasinmotion.IfShenwasgoingtomakeanimportantcross,firstshewouldleanherbodyinthedirectionshewasgoing,tocreateapictureofvisualmomentumbeforemovingherfeet.Inthemiddleofthefirstevening’sperformance,whenShendeliveredDuLiniang’ssearchingmonologue,shespentthebetterpartof15minutesinmotion.Oh,andshewassingingtheentiretime.

Therewasalsoastylisticcontinuumbetweenspeechandsong,withseveralgradationsdependingonthecharacter’ssocialclass.Inthebeginning,itwasdifficulttoadjusttoYu’sspeechbecausehefrequentlyemployedfalsetto.Butwewerequicklycaughtupinhisforcefulcharacterization.Shen,Yu,andtheentirecastseamlesslycombinedthemovementandvocalaspectsoftheirroles.

ThesignaturesoundofChineseoperasingingisextraordinarilydifficulttoproduce（aswithallclassicalsinging）.LikeHandel’sarias,thesongsofThePeonyPavilionoftenlingeredforalongtimeoverasingletextualphrase.Thesinger’sbreathcontrolhadtobeperfect.Tohelp,afluteaccompaniedallthevocallines.StrengthenedbyZhouYouliang’ssumptuousorchestration,thelyricismofthemajorariaswasbeautifullyrealized.OnceIadjustedtothevocalstyle,Iwasabletoattendtotheshiftingemotionalcharacterofthemusic.Bythethirdnight,asPaihadpromised,Ididn’twantittoend.
