They'rephysicalwonders--abletoendureextremeconditionsforextensiveperiodsoftimewhilerunningfastandpullingmorethantheirownweight.Sled(雪橇)dogshavebeenaroundforgenerations,andtodaytheyremainalargepartofadogdriver'slife.
InArctic(北极的)regions,some35000yearsago,Eskimos'dogsbredwithwolvesandotherdogs.Theiroffspringwerewell-adaptedtothecoldandsnow.There'snosayingexactlywhensomeonethoughttohavedogspullsleds,butitwaswellbefore1000B.C.thatdogsledsprovidedameansoftransportationandawaytohaulgoods.Inrecentyears,peoplelookingforuniqueoutingshavegoneonrecreationaltripswithsleddogs.Anumberofcompaniesmarkettouristtreksviadogsledforadventuretravelers.
DogsledracinginAlaskaformallybeganin1908,whensleddogownersinNome,Alaska,heldthefirstAll-AlaskaSweepstakes,a408-mileracefromNometoCandleandback.Andin1973,theinauguralIditarodTrailSledDogRacetookplaceonaroutecoveringmorethan1000milesinAlaska.TherearemorecompetitionsinmanyofthecontinentalUnitedStates,andsometakeplaceondryland.Inadditiontoenduranceraces,sled-dogeventsincludesprintraces,weightpulls(inwhichdogstrytopullthemostweight)andfreightraces(inwhichdogstrytopullaweightedsledthefastest).
Stamina(耐力)andStrength
Manybreedsofdogsareusedtopullsleds,includingofficialAmericanKennelClubbreedssuchastheSiberianhusky,MalamuteandSamoyed.However,manysleddogsareofmixedbreedandarecalledAlaskahuskyorEskimodogs.Whilesomesleddogsmayhavewolfbloodlines,it'sgenerallynotdesirabletohaveamixtureofbloodbetweenthetwo.
Sleddogsarebredfortheirspeedandenduranceaswellasleadershipqualities.Theyarebigdogswiththickcoatsandwide,fiatfeet.Theysleepwiththeirtailscoveringtheirnosestokeepwarm.Dogsthatweigharound40to45poundsaretheidealsizetopullsleds,butsomemayweighasmuchas85pounds.
Youngdogsthatareenthusiasticrunners,easy-goingandmentallytougharegoodchoicesforsleddogs.Adog'sgendermatterslittleandbothmaleandfemaledogsareconsideredequally.
Forracing,themostintelligentandfastestdogsarepickedtobeleaddogsandruninthefrontofthepack.Behindthemrunswingdogs,whosejobistodirecttheteamaroundturnsandcurves.Atthebackofthedogteamarethewheeldogsorwheelers,whoarerightinfrontofthesledandareusuallythelargestandstrongestoftheteam.Therestofthedogsareknownsimplyasteamdogs.
Dogsaretypicallyfrom2to10yearsoldwhentheypullsleds.Aftertheyretire,theymightremainwiththeirowneratakennelorbeadoptedaspetsbyothers.Rescuegroupsforsleddogstakeinunwanteddogsandcareforthem,tryingtoplacetheminlovinghomes.
Whilesnowmobiles(alsocalledsnowmachines),helicoptersandairplanesarenowoftenusedinplaceofsleddogs,therearestilltimeswhendogtransportationispreferred.Harshweatherconditionscanmakeflyinghazardous,andcertainterraincanbemoredifficultforsnowmachinestocrossthanfordogs.Dogscanbemorereliablethanman-mademachines,they'regoodcompanionstohaveonlongtreksandtheycanbecheapertoownthanotherformsoftransportation.
BecomingaSledDog
Thenumberofsleddogsatatypicalkennel(养狗场)isaround75,thoughsomemighthouseasfewas20orasmanyas150.Manykennelownersaregreedymushers(赶狗拉雪)andcompeteindogsledraces.Theyalsotrainothermushersandsellandleasedogs.
Thetrainingforeachteamofracingdogsvariesbymusher(orwhomeverispreparingthedogstorace).Conditioningthedogstonmlongdistancesisvital,andteamsmaycover2000to3000milesinthecourseoftrainingleadinguptoanendurancerace.Sincetrainingmaytakeplaceyear-round,thedogssometimesnmondryland,andsometimespullall-terrainvehicles.
Dogownersstarttrainingtheirdogstopullsledsataveryyoungage.Whentheyareacoupleofmonthsold,theymaybefittedwithaharnessandcollar,justsotheygetusedtowearingthem.Astheygetolder,asmallobjectmaybeattachedtotheharnesstopracticepullingweight.Mushersalsostartteachingthedogsverbalcommands.Whendogsarereadytotrainalongsideateam,ataround6to8monthsold,theystartbypullinglightloadsforshortdistances.Overtime,theybuilduptheirstrengthandstaminaandareabletogofartherandpullmore.
Sleddogsthatarewellcaredforandlovedbytheirownersarequitefriendlyandgentle.Whiletheymayfightwithotherdogs,itisrarethatasleddogwouldbeaggressivetowardpeople.Mushershavebeenquotedassayingthattheytakebettercareoftheirdogsthanthemselves,andthatthedogseatbetterthantheydo.Relationshipsbetweendogandmushervary,butmostmushersconsidertheirdogsfamily.Mushersgenerallyfollowthereasoningthatadogthat'snotproperlycaredforwillnotperform,soitwouldn'tmakesensetomistreatdogs.
ForracessuchastheIditarod,veterinariansareonhandtoexaminedogs,andracerulesrequireproofofcertainvaccinesandcheck-ups.Dogsareimplantedwithmicrochipstohelpkeeptrackofthem.TheInternationalSledDogVeterinaryMedicalAssociationisagroupofveterinarianswhoarededicatedtothewelfareofsleddogs.
GettingReadyfortheRace
Racingsleddogsneedtoeataround10000caloriesperday.DuringtheIditarodrace,thattranslatestoabout2000poundsoffoodforoneteamfortheentirerace.Meatisthemainingredient,buttheyalsoconsumeotherfats,oils,drydogfoodsandvitaminsupplements.DogseatateachofthemorethantwodozencheckpointsontheIditarodroute,buttheyalsogetsnackseveryfewhours.Gearfordogsincludesfabricbootiestoprotecttheirfeetfromtheelements,andasledteammaygothrough2000bootiesduringarace.
Thenumberofdogspullingthesledvariesbyraceandbymusher.IntheIditarod,thereareamaximumof16dogsonateam.Attherace'sstart,theremustbebetween12and16dogsperentrant.Attherace'send,atleastsixdogsmustbepartoftheteamthatcrossesthefinishline.
