Lesson1TheQuest探索

Takingthetrain,thetwofriendsarrivedinBerlininlateOctober1922,andwentdirectly（=atonce）totheaddressofChouEn-lai.他们两个人坐火车于一九二二年十月底到达柏林，立即去周恩来的住处。

Wouldthismanreceivethemasfellowcountrymen,orwouldhetreatthemwithcoldsuspicionandquestionthemcautiouslyabouttheirpastcareersasmilitarists?

这个人会不会像手足同胞一样接待他们呢？

会不会疑虑重重，详细询问他们在军阀时代的经历呢？

ChuTehrememberedhisage.Hewasthirty-six,hisyouthhadpassedlikeascreamingeagle,leavinghimoldanddisillusioned.朱德想起自己的年龄，他已三十六岁，青春像一路鸣叫的鹰，早已一闪而逝，留给他的是衰老和幻灭。

WhenChouEn-lai’sdooropenedtheysawaslendermanofmorethanaverageheight（中等身材）withgleamingeyesandafacesostrikingthatitborderedonthebeautiful.周恩来的房门打开时，他们看到的是一个身材瘦长、比普通人略高一点的人，两眼闪着光辉，面貌很引人注意，称得上清秀。

Yetitwasamanlyface,seriousandintelligent,andChujudgedhimtobeinhismiddletwenties（二十五六岁；inthetwenties二十年代）.可是那是个男子汉的面庞，严肃而聪颖，朱德看他大概是二十五六岁的年龄。

Chouwasaquietandthoughtfulman,evenalittleshyashewelcomedhisvisitors,urgedthemtobeseatedandtotellhowhecouldhelpthem.周恩来举止优雅，待人体贴，在招呼他们坐下，询问有何见教的时候，甚至还有些腼腆。

他怎样逃出云南，怎样会见孙中山，怎样在上海被陈独秀拒绝，怎样为了寻求自己的新的生活方式和中国的新的革命道路而来到欧洲。

HewantedtojointheChineseCommunistPartygroupinBerlin,hewoulddoanythinghewasaskedtodobut（=except）returntohisoldlife,whichhadturnedtoashesbeneathhisfeet.他要求加入中国共产党在柏林的党组织，他一定会努力学习和工作，只要不再回到旧的生活里去----它已经在他的脚底下化为尘埃了----派他做什么工作都行。

AshetalkedChouEn-laistoodfacinghim,hisheadalittletoonesideaswashishabit（=asitwashishabit=whichwashishabit=andthatwashishabit）,listeningintentlyuntilthestorywastold,andthenquestioninghim.他娓娓而谈，周恩来就站在他面前，习惯地侧着头，一直听到朱德把话说完，才提出问题。

Whenbothvisitorshadtoldtheirstories,Chousmiledalittle,saidhewouldhelpthemfindrooms（help后面的不定式不加to）,andarrangeforthemto（不能说arrangethemto）jointheBerlinCommunistgroupascandidatesuntiltheirapplicationhadbeensenttoChinaandananswerreceived（=ananswerhadbeenreceived）.两位来客把经历说完后，周恩来微笑着说，他可以帮他们找到住的地方，替他们办理党在柏林的支部的手续，在入党申请书寄往中国（主动形式具有被动意义）而尚未批准之前，暂作候补党员。

Whenthereplycameafewmonthslatertheywereenrolledasfullmembers,butChu’smembershipwaskeptasecretfromoutsiders.过了几个月，回信来了，两人都被吸收为正式党员，但朱德的党籍对外界保持秘密（主动形式被动含义）。

SeveraltimesinhistripstoChina,whichhemadeasaguestoftheChineseGovernment,Bill’sbirthdayoccurredwhilehewasinBeijing.比尔作为中国政府的客人多次访问中国，好几次都赶上在北京过生日。

OntheseoccasionshewasgivenadinnerinhishonourandPremierZhouEn-laiwould（表过去经常发生的动作）attend.这时候，会以他的名义举办一次晚宴，周恩来总理总是出席。

快到结束的时候，他站起来，走到柜台前，要了一杯冰淇淋，放在我面前----别忘了，他可是总理呀！

Hesaid‘Thisisforyou’.他对我说：

“这是为您准备的。

”Isaid‘Ididn’tknowyoucouldspeakEnglish’.我说：

“没想到您会说英语呀。

”Helaughedandhesaid‘alittlebit’measuringwithhisfingerandthumb.他笑了起来，接着说：

“一点点。

”他一面说着，一面用食指和拇指比画着。

Sometimeswhenwewerealonethenhe’dspeaktomeinEnglish.有时我们单独在一起，他就跟我说英语。

‘Thisisforyou,’BillMorrowheardonmanyoccasionshewouldneverforget----suchaswhenwastakeninaboatdowntheGrandCanalandeveryboatthatpassedsoundeditssireninsalutation.“这是为您准备的。

”这句话，比尔．莫罗在许多难忘的场合听到过----比如他在乘船沿大运河南下的时候,从旁边驶过的每一条船都拉响汽笛,表示敬意。

OrwhenhewasshownoverthegreatNaijingBridge,builtwheretheferriesusedto（过去经常做某事）carrytrainsacrosstheChangjiangRiver.再比如参观南京长江大桥，在修这座桥以前，要靠渡船在这里运送火车过江。

Hewasgivenachairandaskedtowaitalittleasdarknesscameon,thensuddenlythewholebridgewasoutlinedinlights.参观大桥的时候，天快黑了，有人给比尔一把椅子，请他坐下等一会儿。

忽然电灯会亮了，照出了整个大桥的轮廓。

‘Thisisforyou.’“这是为您准备的。

”‘Youmustn’tuseallthatelectricitytopleaseme,’heprotested,‘allNanjingwillenjoyittoo,’hewastold.他不满地说道：

“你们不应该费这么多电，就为了让我高兴。

”“全南京人都可以欣赏嘛。

”这是比尔听到的回答。

IamfilledwithwonderwhenIconsidertheimmeasurablecontrastbetweenthetwoliveswhichitconnects.从这一天开始，我的生活和以前迥然不同，一想到这一点，我就非常兴奋。

Ontheafternoon（后面有具体的某一天作定语，不能用intheafternoon）ofthateventful（不寻常的）day,Istoodontheporch,dumb,expectant.那天下午，我一声不响，怀着期待的心情站在门廊里。

Iguessedvaguelyfrommymother’ssignsandfromthehurryingtoandfro（来来往往）inthehousethatsomethingunusualwasabouttohappen,soIwenttothedoorandwaitedonthesteps.母亲给我打着手势，人们在屋里匆匆地走来走去，我模模糊糊地预感到一件不寻常的事就要发生了。

于是我就走到门口，站在台阶上等着。

Ifeltapproachingfootsteps.IstretchedoutmyhandasIsupposedtomymother.我感到有人走近，于是伸出了手，以为是把手伸向母亲。

Someonetookit,andIwascaughtupandheldcloseinthearmsofherwhohadcometorevealallthingstome,and,morethanallthingselse,toloveme.不知是谁抓住了我的手，把我拉过去，紧紧地搂在她的怀里。

就是她教我认识了世上的各种事物，而且不仅如此，她还疼爱我。
