Oneofthemostwell-knownsculpturesintheworldiscalled“TheThinker”.ItwascreatedbytheFrenchsculptor,AugusteRodin,inthelate1800s.Itshowsastrong,powerfulmansittingwithhiselbowproppedonhiskneeandhischininhishand.ThissculptureisbothanillustrationofReneDescartes’famousaffirmation“Ithink,thereforeIam”andaportrayalofamancapturedinamomentofdeepthought.Thecapacitytothinkandtoreflectisuniquetohumans.Rodin’ssculpturesymbolizestheessenceofmankind.

 

Therearemanytypesofthoughtprocessesincludingdeductiveandinductivereasoning,contemplation,meditation,anddaydreaming.Reflectionusuallyimpliescarefulanddeliberatethinkingaboutactions,eventsorexperiences.Mostpeopletaketimetoreflectbeforedoingsomethingreallyimportantortoanalyzesignificanteventsintheirpast.

 

Somepeoplehavethetimeandtheself-disciplinetokeeparecordoftheirdailythoughtsandactivitiesintheformofadiaryorajournal.Onenormallyassociatespublishedjournalswithfamousexplorers,statesmen,andwriters.Oneoftherareandbest-knowndiarieswrittenbyayoungpersonisthatofAnneFrank.ShedescribedthedailylifeofherfamilywhiletheywerelivinginhidinginAmsterdamduringtheGermanoccupationofHolland.Herdiary,discoveredafterherdeathattheageof16inaGermanconcentrationcamp,wastranslatedandpublishedinmanylanguages.Despiteheryoungage,AnneFrankprovidedprofoundandmovingreflectionsonasignificantperiodofhistory.

Obviouslyreflectingonlifedoesnotmeanthatonehastohaveapublicationinmindorthatonehastoanalyzeaperiodofmanyyears.Onthecontrary,“takingtimetosmelltheroses”,asthewell-knownsayinggoes,canbebeneficialandfulfillingatanytimeoftheday.Itissoeasytogetcaughtupinthebusyroutineofdailylifethatoneforgetstopauseandquestionone’sactionsandmotives.Oneofthemostimportantstepsinpersonaldevelopmentisthecapacitytostopandreflect.Bysittingpeacefullyandreflectingonwhatwehavedoneorwhatweareabouttodo,wetoocapturetheuniversalgestureofRodin’s“Thinker”.
