Unitéd'Habitation

L'Unitéd'habitationdeMarseille,commandéeàLeCorbusierendécembre1945parleministreRaoulDautry（ministèredelaReconstruction）,estinauguréeenoctobre1952.Connucomme"lamaisondufada",c'estun"laboratoiresocial",associant"logis"et"prolongements"（équipementsetcommerces）;ilabrite900habitantsdans337appartements,des"cellules"conçuescommeautantdemaisonsindividuelles.L'appartementnuméro50,enfaçadesud,estdutypeE1,ou"celluleinférieuremono-orientée".Cetappartementestenparfaitétatdeconservationavecsonmobilierintégré,conçuparCharlottePerriand.Lesappartementssontvendusenco-propriétéentre1952et1959.

TheUnitéd’Habitation

LeCorbusier’sinventions,suchasMaisonDom-InoandMaisonCitrohan,combinednumerousconceptswithinafascinatingnetworkthatinvolveddifferentlevelsanddomains.Conceptswerecarefullytranslatedintoarchitecturalelementsandvice-versa,oftenevolvinga（re）combinationwithothers,suchastheelementsthatcomposethe“fivepointsformodernarchitecture”ortheelementsofhis“architecturalpromenade”.LeCorbusierhadaverypeculiarwayoflookingattheobjectofdesign:

ontheonehandheproceededfromextremelygeneralconceptstryingtoprovidesolutionsfortheprimaryneedsoflodging,work,cultivationofbodyandmind,andtraffic;ontheotherhand,heclaimedtohaveproceededfromtheconceptofthekitchenasamodernhearth,fromwhichtherestfollowednaturally.This“naturally”developeddesignusedthetechniqueofdefamiliarizationovertheyearsusingsyncretismandmetastatementstocometohismaterial.

Proceedingfromtheearlierexamplesoftransferencesoftheprecedentfeatures,thissectionwillpresentaspectsofapossible“ontogeny”oftheUnitéd’HabitationofMarseilles.

TheGrandPlanortheOntogenyoftheUnitéd’Habitation

LeCorbusierclaimedthattheUnitéd’Habitationwastheresultof“40yearsgestation”.Wesuggestthatthis“gestation”wasnotaquestionofdevelopment（ontogeny）butoflineage（phylogeny）.ThecreationoftheUnitéseemstohavebeentheresultoftheuseandmodificationofspecificelements,ofteninsmallchainsoflinkagesovertheyearssuchasthe“fivepointsforamodernarchitecture”,orLeCorbusier’sbottle,binandbottlerack（linkedfeatures）.

LeCorbusier’staskwastoprovideahousingschemeforworkersinthebadeconomicsituationaftertheSecondWorldWarinFrance.Hissolutiongrouped330unitstohouseacommunityofroughly1600inhabitantsinan18-storeybuildingprovidingextensiveservicestothecommunity.Thiswasauniqueopportunitytoputallhisideasconcerningmulti-familyhousingschemesintopractice.HehadalreadydevelopedtheMaisonDom-Ino,theMaisonCitrohanandtheImmeublesVillageaswellasconceptsatcityplanninglevelsuchastheconceptofthe“verticalgardencity”.TheUnitéd’HabitationfortheworkersofMarseilleswastheresultofallthesestudies.IndesigningtheUnité,hehadcertainlyrecalledmanyofthoseconcepts;someofageneralorder（light,sun,greenery）butalsoothersthatcouldbemorestraightforwardlytranslatedintoarchitecturalelements（thepiloti,theroofgarden,thefreefaçades,andsoforth）.

Infact,manypartsofthisbuildingblockwerealreadydevelopedindetailthroughexperimentsinotherdesigns.However,beforehecouldusetheseprecedentfeatures,heneededtohaveanoverallframework.LeCorbusierhadtoassembletherightfeaturesintoawholetomatchthenewdesiredconfiguration.Inhisworldfullofmetaphors,hethenplacedbottles（dwellings）intothebins（neutralizingwalls）andthebinsintothebottlerack（structuralframework）;acollectiveroofgardenontopofthestructurewithactivitiesforallinhabitants,andapilotifreeingthewholeblockfromthehumidground,providingthewholecommunitywithparks,schoolsandotherextensionsofthehomeandfreeingthelandscape/horizonofobstaclesatgroundlevel.

Itwasnotonlyaquestionofassemblingtheexistentelements,i.e.recallingthemandputtingthemtogether.Theyneededtobeadaptedtothenewconstraintsandavailabletechnology.Duetotheseconstraintsandpossibilities,“mutations”occurred.

Theroofgarden,thebottlerackandpilotigavetheprimaryorgeneralstructureoftheUnité（Figure1）.ThisprimaryframeworkenabledLeCorbusiertousemanyofhisprecedents,someofthemwithfurther“mutations”.

Somefeatureschangedtheirphysicalexpression,i.e.theirpatternorstructuralconfigurationchangedas,forexample,theslenderpilotiofthehousesofthe1920schangedintothegargantuanpilotioftheUnité.Otherfeatureschangedfromdomainlevel,meaningthattheresultantelementacquiredusesdifferenttotheoriginalone.Forexample,theroofgardenwasoriginallyafamilygarden,butitchangedintoacommunitygardenafteritsrecombinationwiththedeckoftheoceanliner（aprecedentofalaterdatethanthevernacularhousesofIstanbul）.Itbecamethesquare,theclub,andthegymnasiumofthebuildingblockcommunity.Inotherwords,someofthelinked“fivepointsofamodernarchitecture”from1927wereusedina“mutated”form.Theinitiallinkagewasbroken;somefeatures“mutated”,andwererecombinedandre-usedintheUnité.Thisisalsotheactofdefamiliarization.

Thefreefaçadeconceptsalsochangedtheirdomainlevel:

fromtheprivate（thedwelling）tothecollective（thebuilding）.Thefreefaçadeconceptwasinitiallytriedoutatthelevelofa（Citrohan）houseaswellasattheleveloftheapartmentunitofhistheoreticalmulti-familybuilding,andthentoafreefaçadeatthelevelofthebuildingblock,wherethefaçadesoftheapartmentunitsarestandardanditsfreedomresidesinthecombinationofthepartstomakethewhole.

Throughourobservation,wemaysaythatLeCorbusiermadeampleuseofthetechniqueofdefamiliarization,buthispurposewastoprovideanewlifestyle.Thefragmentsofthepastwere“collected”allovertheworld,fromthesavagehut,thevernacularhousesofIstanbul,totheoceanliner;butalsofromthingsthatpeopledonotquiterelatetoadwelling,suchasthebottleandthebottlerack.

WehaveshownthatLeCorbusierusedtheprocessofdefamiliarizationinsuchawaythatonecouldspeakofalineageorphylogenyofprecedentswhichwerecontinuouslychangingandrecombining.

Wehavealsoshownthatinthedevelopmentofaspecificproject,theUnitéd’HabitationofMarseille,thatLeCorbusiertookhisfivepointsforamodernarchitectureoutofitslinkage,mutatedsomeofthemandafterwardsrecombinedit.Inaformofsyncretismheusedabottlerack,theroofgardenandthepilotitoprovideanoverallframe.Heinventedanewtype,abuildingtofulfillhisutopianviewofanewlifestyleformodernman.Inotherwords,hewasinaprocessofcreatinganewidentityandhisprecedentswerenotbasedonmaterialcollectedintheregionbutfromallovertheworld.

Charles-EdouardJeanneret,architecteencoredébutantetartisteendevenir,affichetrèstôtsavolontéd'atteindredesobjectifsambitieuxetsondésirdelaisserderrièreluilestracessignificativesdeceteffort,plusdurablesquesonexistenceterrestre:

«Quelavieaitunbutetnonpasquelavienesoitqu'uneflèchelancéeverslamort»,écrit-ilàsesparentsen1910.

DevenuLeCorbusier,sanshéritiersdirectsetguidéparlacraintequelesarchivesetlesœuvresqu’ilasoigneusementconservéesnesoientdisperséesaprèssamort,ils’estattachépendantlesquinzedernièresannéesdesavieàconcevoiretàmettreenœuvre,jusquedanssesmoindresdétails,leprojetd’uneFondationquiporteraitsonnom.

Dès1949,dansuncourrierqu’iladresseàsonamiJean-JacquesDuvalpourlequelilaconstruitl’UsinedeSaint-Dié,ilécrit:

Onpeutcassersapipeàtouteheuredelavie.J’enparlaisavecmonfrère,venupasserquelquesjoursici.J’aiprisdesdispositions,d’accordavecmafemme,pourléguerauxpauvrescequejepossède.

Or,cequejepossèdepeutfairedupapieràbrûler,oumieux.J’aiici,24rueNungesseretColi（etmême35Sèvresdansunecave）desarchivesconsidérablesetmultiformes:

dessins,écrits,notes,carnetsdevoyage,albums,etc.Ilnefaudraitpasqu’unvoyouquelconquepuissevenirpillersanscoupférir,etannulerdessériesquivalentparcequ’ellessontgroupées.

Endeuxmots,ilfaudraqu’onétudieunpeumesarchivesafindelesvaloriserutilement（pourvendreoupourdonneràdesgens,desinstitutions,desmusées）.

Conclusion:

cettelettreapourbutdevousmettrelapuceàl’oreilleetdevousprier–lorsquel’heureaurasonné–deprendreimmédiatementpossession,c'est-à-direcontrôledemesarchivesafindelesmettreàl’abrid’unedispersionerronée.

Etcetteprésentelettre,avecmasignaturevoussertdepièceformelleàtoutesfinsutiles.
