很多中国学生觉得这两个不是很重要，随便写写或者套中介的模板就行。

我的看法是千万千万千万不要这么做，录取委员会的教授们每天阅申请无数，一个平凡的ps和雷同的模板式eassy他们一眼就能看出来，中国学生的gpa和tofelgregmat成绩一般都不差，要想让自己standout，核心竞争力我认为就在履历，ps和essay上。

Thepreamble:

You'vegotalong,longtimetoprepare,somyfirstpieceofadvicewouldbenottothinktoofarahead. Iknowyouprobablyhearthisallthetime,butthemostimportantthingforyourapplicationisthatyoufollowyourinterests,studywhatyou'reinterestedin,anddowhatyoudobestanddoitwell. Italsomeansmakingsurethatyouarewell-rounded,thatyoutaketimetopursuehobbiesandactivitiesoutsideofclass,andthatyouremembertopushyourboundariesanddosomeactivitiesthatwillmakeyougrowasaperson.

OneofthebigdifferencesbetweenBusinessSchoolandothergraduateschoolsisthattheyaren'tnecessarilylookingonlyatacademicachievement. B-Schoolswanttopickaclassofwell-rounded,experiencedpeoplefromdiverseandinterestingbackgrounds. Thismakesforamuchmoreequitable（orsometimesmuchmore"random"）selectionprocess. UnlikeLawSchool,whereacertainGPAandLSATscorecanalmostguaranteeadmittance,withB-School,youoftenfindpeoplewithlowergradesorlowerscoresbutreallystrongexperienceareadmittedtotopprograms. Itcanbeverydifficulttopredictorcontrolwhereyoustandintheadmissionsprocess.

Withthatgeneralmaterialoutoftheway:

BusinessSchoolapplicationsareallabout"tellingyourstory." Theschoolswanttoseethatyouhaveaclear,organizedplanforyourlife,andthatyouhaveaveryspecificideaabouthowbusinessschoolfitsintothisplanandwhy.Ofcourse,veryveryfewpeopleareluckyenoughintheirearlyormid-twentiestohaveanythingremotelyresemblinganorganizedlifeplan. Therefore,businessschoolsbecomeallaboutthe"story:

"howdoyoushape,twist,makeup,andimagineyourexperiencesanddesiresintoacoherentargumenttopresenttoB-Schools.

Somesmallbasicthingscanhelp.MakesureyouhaveenoughMath,EconomicsorStatisticscoursesonyourtranscripttodemonstratethatyouaregoodwithnumbersandwon'tstrugglewiththeacademicsideofB-school. ThelevelofMathinbusinessschoolisprettybasic,soevenjusttakingoneortwoclassesintheseareaswouldprobablybeenoughtoshowyouhavetherequiredskills. IfyouareplanningtomajorinEconomicsorScience,don'tworryaboutthis.Butifyouareahumanitiesstudent,considertakingaMicroEconomicsclassorsomethingsimilar.ThiswillalsodemonstratethatyouhadanearlyinterestintheBusinessfield.

Followingonthat,youshouldtrytodemonstrateaninterestineconomicsorbusiness,orinhowtheyrelatetoyourchosenfieldofinterest.IfyouareinterestedinMediaandEntertainment,sitdownandtrytoworkouthowgoingtobusinessschoolwouldhelpyouadvanceinthatfield. It'simportanttorememberthatB-Schoolsseethemselvesasameanstoanend,notanendinthemselves. Theywantstudentswhoareambitiousandplantousebusinessschooltogetthemaheadintheirchosenfields. TheyDONOTwantstudentswhoareapplyingtobusinessschoolbecausetheywantthecredentialontheirrecord,orbecausetheydon'tknowwhattheywanttodoandneedmoretimetofigureitout. Thatbeingsaid,B-Schoolisfullofthosekindofpeople（whohavenoideawhattheywanttodoyet）,butallofthemmanagedtotellacompellingstoryontheirapplicationsabouthowbusinessschoolwastherightplaceforthemandhowitwouldhelpthemintheircareers.

Trytodisplayinitiativeandbecomealeaderinanareathatinterestsyou. Trytobecometheheadofaclub,thecaptainofasportsteam,theeditorofamagazine,orthedirectorofamovie. B-schoolswilllookforthatkindofengagementand"management"experience. Theywanttoknowthatyouaregoodatinteractingwithpeople,thatyouhavesome"leadership"skills,andthatyouareinvestedenoughinwhatyoudotowanttotakeownershipofit.

Now,aboutworkexperience. ItusedtobethecasethatveryfewstudentscamestraightfromundergradprogramsintoBusinessSchool. Althoughschoolsnowseemtobeadmittingmoreandmorestudentsstraightoutofcollege,itisstillrareandyoumayfindyourselfstrugglingwithmanypartsoftheapplication. Eachapplicationasksspecificessayquestionsabout"leadership"andpersonalexperience,andthemorevariedandinterestingyourresponses,thebetteryouressays. Sincemostundergradprogramsaresimilar,itwillthereforebeharderforyou,asanundergrad,toputthesameamountofcoloranddiversityintoyourapplicationassomeonewhohasbeenoutofschoolforafewyears. Itwillalsobedifficultforyourtoargueconvincinglythatyouunderstandhowbusinessschoolfitsintoyourcareer,nothavingbegunyourcareer. 

IwouldstronglyadviselookingforasummerinternshipatacompanyorNGOinthefieldthatyouareinterestedinduringcollege. Iwouldalsostronglystronglyadvisetryingtofindajobinyourfieldforatleast2yearsaftercollegebeforeconsideringschool. Formanypeople,BusinessSchoolISNOTanintelligentchoice. Ifyoualreadyhaveagreatjobatacompanyyoulike,withopportunityforupwardmobility,whyspend$200,000foraschoolthatatbestcanonlysendyoubackintothesamefieldwithasmallpromotion?

 Ithinkbusinessschoolisbestforthosewhoareinterestedinchangingcareers,orwhohavereachedaceilingintheirupwardmomentumandneedbusinessschooltohelpthemtakethatnextstep.IfeelthesituationisslightlydifferentinChina,wheregraduateeducationisbecomingmoreandmoreofabasicthresholdforemployment,butintheUSitiscertainlyworthtryingtosucceedonyourownbeforespendingalotofmoneytodoso.

Thosefewyearsaftercollegewillalsogiveyouachancetobecomeamorewell-roundedperson,totravelplacesyou'vealwayswantedtotravel,toseethingsyou'vealwayswantedtosee,andtotakesomerisksthatmightbeharderlaterinlife.Startacompany,writeabook,movetoPeru--evenifyoufail,youwillbedemonstratingtoschoolsthatyouhaveapassionandareindependentandambitiousaboutpursuingit. Andifyousucceedordiscoversomethingnewthatyoureallylove,itwilleithergiveyouagreatstorytotellonyourapplicationormaybeevenmakeyousosuccessfulyoudon'tneedtoapplyatall!

Andthisisthehardestpartoftheapplication. Iappliedtofiveschoolsandhadtowritesomewherearound40essaysbytheendoftheprocess. Thesewilltakeendlessdraftsandrevisions. Sinceyouarethinkingsomanyyearsahead,myadvicewouldbetostartpracticingnow. Notseriously,yet,buttakeamomenteveryonceinawhiletojotdownessayideas. Trytoremembertheimportantmomentsinyourlife,whatyoufeltandhowtheychangedyou. Whatisespeciallymeaningfultoyouandwhy?

 Themoreyoupractice,thebetterawriteryou'llbecome.Thesamesubjectsthatmakegoodessaysmightmakegoodblogpostings,diaryentries,orevenpublicationsinastudentjournalsomewhere. Considerthoseoptionsasawaytopractice.Whenyoustartapplyingforreal,makesureyousendyouressaystobereadbyfriendswhoareinbusinessschoolalready. Theywillknowbestwhatmakesagoodapplicationessay. Themorepeoplewhoreadyourwork,thebetteritwillbe.

Recommendations:

 B-schoolsdiscourageapplicantsfromusingacademicreferences,althoughthismustnotapplyforundergrads. Nevertheless,considerlookingforamentoratasummerjoborinternshipwhomighthelpadviseyourcareerandeventuallywriteyouarecommendation. Theschoolswanttoseewhoyouareasaperson,asaworkerandasacolleague,notjustasastudent.
