InOctober,1961,atCrowleyFieldinCincinnati,Ohio,anold,deafgentlemannamedWilliamE.HoystooduptothrowoutthefirstballoftheWorldSeries.MostpeopleatCrowleyFieldonthatdayprobablydidnotrememberHoybecausehehadretiredfromprofessionalbaseball58yearsearlier,in1903.However,hehadbeenanoutstandingplayerandthedeafcommunitystilltalksabouthimandhisyearsinbaseball.

WilliamE.HoywasborninHouckstown,Ohio,onMay23,1862.Hebecamedeafwhenhewastwoyearsold.HeattendedtheColumbusOhioSchoolfortheDeafin1872.Aftergraduationeightyearslater,hestartedplayingsemi-professionalbaseballwhileworkingasashoemaker.

Hoybeganplayingprofessionalbaseballin1886forOshkosh(Wisconsin)oftheNorthwesternLeague.In1888,hestartedasanoutfielderwiththeoldWashingtonSenators.Hissmallstatureandspeedmadehimanoutstandingbaserunner.Hewasverygoodatstealingbasesduringhiscareer.Inthe1888majorleagueseason,hestole82bases.HewasalsotheSenators'leadinghitterin1888.Hoywasambidextrous;hethrewright-handedandbattedleft-handed.OnJune19,1889,hethrewoutthreebattersattheplatefromhisoutfieldposition.

ThearmsignalsusedbyumpirestodaytoindicateballsandstrikesbeganbecauseofHoy.Theumpireliftedhisrightarmtoindicatethatthepitchwasastrike,andhisleftarmtosignalthatitwasaball.

Formanyyears,peopletalkedaboutHoy'slastballgamein1903.HewasplayingforLosAngelesofthePacificCoastWinterLeague.ItwasamemorablegamebecauseHoymadeaspectacularplaywhichwonthegame.Itwasaveryfoggynightand,therefore,veryhardtoseetheball.Intheninthinning,withtwomenout,Hoymanagedtocatchaflyballtomakethethirdoutinspiteofthefog.LosAngelesdefeatedtheiropposition.
