Thisisareadingclass,andmystudentsare40seniorhighstudentsfromclass1,Grade1.It’stheirsecondEnglishlessonsincetheyenteredthehighschool.Besides,theydon’thavelearnedanybasicreadingskillsandtheycannotexpressthemselvesclearly.

Theteachingmaterialfromunit1ofOxfordAdvancedEnglishwhichisprintedbyYilinPublishingHouse.ThisreadingpassageisaboutavividdescriptionoftheschoollifeinManchestermadebyWeiHua,aChinesegirlwhooncestudiedintheUK.Thestudentswhoareexpectedtolearnthisunitarethenewcomerstohighschools.TheywillcertainlycuriousaboutBritishhighschoollifeaswellastheirownschoollife.Sothetopicisanamazingoneforthestudents,anditwilldefinitelystimulatethestudents’interestsincetheycanimagineandarrangetheirownnewschoollife.

2.EncouragethestudentstogotothelibraryorsurftheInternettogetsomeinformationaboutschoollifeintheUK,ifpossible.Theycanalsobedividedintoseveralgroupstogetsomeinformationabouthighschoollifeindifferentcountriesastheylike.

3.AskthestudentstoreadthepassageSchoollifeintheUKonpages2to3,aswellasreadingstrategyonpage3.Iftimepermits,askthemtofinishexercisesC1,C2andDonpage4.

Whilethestudentsarereadingthispassage,somereadingstrategiesshouldbeintroduced:

skimming—togetthegeneralideaofapassagebylookingatthetitlesandheadings,thefirstandlastsentencesofparagraphsandthefirstandlastparagraphsaswellaspicturesandchart;scanning—tofindcertaininformationinatextquicklybylookingforkeywordsandphrases,dates,numbers,etc.

Task-basedLanguageTeachingmethods,CommunicativeLanguageTeachingmethodsandSituationalLanguageTeachingmethodswillbeusedinmyclass.Meanwhile,differentin-classactivitiesshouldbewellorganizedforallthestudentstotakepartinaccordingtothecontentofthetextwiththepurposeoftrainingtheirskillsinnotonlyreading,butalsoinlisteningandspeaking.Somechartsandtablesareusedforthestudentstofindsomeinformationforthetext.Andthestudentsshouldbeencouragedtotakepartindifferentactivitiesofpairworkorgroupwork.Theyshouldlearntoenjoyteam-work.Morein-classactivitiesarerelatedtothestudents’dailylifeandrequirecommonsensefromthestudents.Andmoreexercisesaregivenindifferentformstohelpthestudentstolearnhowtousesomeofthenewwordsandphrases.
