PREFACE

Every experiencedteachermusthavenoticedthedifficultyofinstructingIndianchildrenoutofbooksthatarespeciallyintendedforuseinEnglishschools.Itisnotmerelythatthesubjectsareunfamiliar,butalmosteveryphrasehasEnglishassociationsthatarestrangetoIndianears.TheenvironmentinwhichtheyarewrittenisunknowntotheIndianschoolboyandhismindbecomesoverburdenedwithitsdetailswhichhefailstounderstand.Hecannotgivehiswholeattentiontothelanguageandthusmasteritquickly.

ThepresentIndianstory-bookavoidssomeatleastoftheseimpediments.Thesurroundingsdescribedinitarethoseofthestudents'everydaylife;thesentimentsandcharactersarefamiliar.Thestoriesaresimplytold,andthenotesattheendwillbesufficienttoexplainobscurepassages.ItshouldbepossiblefortheIndianstudenttofollowthepagesofthebookeasilyandintelligently.ThosestudentswhohavereadthestoriesintheoriginalwillhavethefurtheradvantageofknowingbeforehandthewholetrendofthenarrativeandthustheywillbeabletoconcentratetheirthoughtsontheEnglishlanguageitself.

ItisproposedtopublishtogetherinasinglevolumetheoriginalstorieswhoseEnglishtranslationsaregiveninthisReader.VersionsofthesamestoriesinthedifferentIndianvernacularshavealreadyappeared,andothersarelikelytofollow.

Twoofthelongeststoriesinthisbook—"MasterMashai"and"TheSonofRashmani"—arereproducedinEnglishforthefirsttime.Therestofthestorieshavebeentaken,withslightrevision,fromtwoEnglishvolumesentitled"TheHungryStones"and"Mashi."AshortparagraphhasbeenaddedfromtheoriginalBengaliattheendofthestorycalled"ThePostmaster."ThiswasunfortunatelyomittedinthefirstEnglishedition.

ThelistofwordstobestudiedhasbeenchosenfromeachstoryinordertobringtonoticedifferenttypesofEnglishwords.Thelistsareinnosenseexhaustive.TheendinviewhasbeentoendeavourtocreateaninterestinIndianwordsandtheirhistory,whichmayleadontofurtherstudy.

Onemorning,forinstance,whenIwasinthemidstoftheseventeenthchapterofmynewnovel,mylittleMinistoleintotheroom,andputtingherhandintomine,said:

BeforeIcouldexplaintoherthedifferencesoflanguageinthisworld,shewasembarkedonthefulltideofanothersubject."Whatdoyouthink,Father?

Thewindowofmyroomoverlookstheroad.Thechildhadseatedherselfatmyfeetnearmytable,andwasplayingsoftly,drummingonherknees.Iwashardatworkonmyseventeenthchapter,wherePratapSingh,thehero,hadjustcaughtKanchanlata,theheroine,inhisarms,andwasabouttoescapewithherbythethird-storywindowofthecastle,whenallofasuddenMinileftherplay,andrantothewindow,crying:

"SureenoughinthestreetbelowwasaCabuliwallah,passingslowlyalong.Heworetheloose,soiledclothingofhispeople,withatallturban;therewasabagonhisback,andhecarriedboxesofgrapesinhishand.
