may,might;can,could;will,would;shall,should;must,need,
dare,dared,usedto,oughtto.
A.
a)表示“能力”(ability),可用can,could,beableto.
Youcanmakethat.
Ican’tdoitbymyself,butIcandoitwithLinda.
Hecandoitnow.
Youcandoitlater.
b)
Icanswim.
IsthereanythingIcandoforyou?
Icanrideabike.
Hecanplaytheviolin.
Shecanreadthatinanhour.
Ican/amabletohelpherifIhavegotenoughmoney.e)尤其是将来的“能力”,通常用will/shallbeableto表示:
Hewon’tbeabletogetthejob.
Canyoudothat?
IfIcan,Iwillgotoseeher.
g)表示过去的“能力”,可用could和was/wereableto,但在肯定句中,could所表示
IcouldrideabikewhenIwasyoung.
AyearagoIcouldstillreadwithoutglasses.h)如果要表示过去做某桩具体事情的“能力”,通常不用could,而用was/wereableto
(以及managedto):
Hewasabletotranslatethearticlewithoutadictionary.
Iwasabletoclimbthehillbeforemyleghurt.i)上述could与was/wereableto用法上的区别仅是就肯定句而言;在否定句中却无此
Hegotsodrunkthathecouldn’t/wasn’tabletofindthefrontdoor.
Icouldn’t/wasn’tabletoplaythepianowhenIwasatschool.
B.
a)表示“可能”(possibility),可用may,might,can,could.may/might表示“可
may/might既可以表示现在的可能,:
Itmay/mightbetrue.
Hemaynot/mightnotlivenearthetheatre.
Hemay/mightbestillwaitingatthedoor.b)
Hemay/mightleavetomorrow.
Hemaynot/mightnotleavenextweek.c)在疑问句中表示“可能”,需用can而不用may:
Wherecanhebe?
Hemaybeintheoffice.
Cantheyhavemissedthebus?
Yes,theymayhave.
He`maynotgotomorrow.=itispossiblethathewillnotgotomorrow.
tpermithimtogotomorrow.Hemay`notgotomorrow.=Idon’
f)正因为在书面语中maynot可能引起歧义,所以表示“不可能”常用can’t,用can/could
That’snotmine.Whosecanitbe?
Itcouldbejohn’s.
Shecan’t/couldn’tlovehim.
Itcan’t/couldn’tbetrue.
Themooncannotalwaysbeatthefull.
Lightningcanbedangerous.
Theroadcanbeblocked.=itispossiblefortheroadtobeblocked.
Theroadmaybeblocked.=itispossiblethattheroadisblocked.
Shemay/mighthavemissedthetrain.
Hemay/mighthavebeenhurt.
Wemay/mightallbeenindulginginanillusion.j)也可用“can/could+不定式完成体”表示过去的“可能”:
Shecan’t/couldhavebeemhurt.
Hecan’t/couldn’thavemissedthetrain.
Icouldhavereportedyou.
Youmighthavekilledyourself.
Youmighthavefinishedtheworklastweek.2(表示“许可”和“不许”
.A
a)请求对方“许可(Permission)”可用can,could,may,might。
may/might与can/could
相比,前者较为正式;may/can与might/could相比,后者较为婉转,更有礼貌。
Can/couldIsmokeinhere?
May/mightIsmokeinhere?
b)表示给予“许可”通常用can/may,而不用could/might:
CouldIuseyourphone?
Yes,ofcourseyoucan.
MightItroubleyouforalight?
Youmayindeed.
Anyonemay/canenrollforthiscourse.
Inthosedaysanyonemight/couldenrollforthiscourse.
B.
CanIuseyourcarfortonight?
No,youcan’t.
MayIgooutforamoment?
No,youmaynot.
Borrowersmaynottakeoutofthelibrarymorethantwobooksatime.
CouldIsayitinChinese?
No,Iamafraidnot.
Hemaynotgo.=Idon’tpermithimtogo.
Hemightnotgo.=possiblyhewillnotgo.e)若要表示过去的“不许可”,通常要说:
Hewasnotallowedtogo.
Ididn’tpermithimtogo.
A.
用should,oughtto,must。
Weshouldlearnfromthemodelworkers.
Youshoulddowhatyourteacherstellyouto.
Heshoulddosomethingtihelpher.b)Should与oughtto同义,都能表示“应该”,往往可以交替使用:
Youshould/oughttodrinkless.
Youshould/oughttotellthepolice.
Youshould/oughttohaveaskedmypermissionfirst.
Youshouldn’t/oughtn’ttohavebeenrestingatthattimeofday.
Youshouldmindyourownbusiness.e)用must表示“敦促”或“命令”,在口气上比should更加强烈,这意味着说话人是权
Youmustbebackbyteno’clock.
Ireallymuststopsmoking.
Wemustdoitagain.
We’llhavetodoitagain.
Imustleaveatsix.
Ihadtoleaveatsixyesterday.h)Must有两个否定形式:
Youmustn’ttalklikethat.
Youarenottotalklikethat.i)上述两句的过去时形式均为:
Youweren’ttotalklikethat.
A:
mustyouleavesosoon?
B:
No,Ineedn’t.
k)与needn’t相当的动词形式是don’tneedto/don’thaveto/haven’tgotto:
Youmustdoitatonce.
Youneedn’tdoitatonce.
Youdon’tneedtodoitatonce.
Youdon’thavetodoitatonce.
Youhaven’tgottodoitatonce.
Youdidn’tneedtodoitatonce.
Youdidn’thavetodoitatonce.
HemustsayitinEnglish.(Iwanthimtodoso)
HehastosayitinEnglish.(becausehedoesn’tknowChinese)
Hemustmovethefurniturehimself.(Iamtoobusytohelphim)
Hehastomovethefurniturehimself.(he’sgotnoonetohelphim)n)
Youwillwaitoutsidethegate.
Youwillreporttomeafterwards.
Parent:
Brian,closethedoor.
Brian:
(nomovementtowardthedoor)
Parent:
Brian!
Youclosethedoor.
Brian:
(Stillnomovementtowardthedoor)
Parent:
Brian!
Youwillclosethedoor!
!
!
B.
表示这种意义,可用should,oughtto和must,其中以用must口气最为肯定。
Sheshouldbehereinaminute.
Thebookshouldappealtoallloversofpoetry.
ThatshouldnotbeadifficultproblemforMary.
Throughanintensivetrainingyoushouldbeabletopasstheexaminationwithout
difficulty.
Theseyoungtreesoughttoprovideshadeintenyears.
Bobhasmadeathoroughstudyofthissubject.Heoughttobeabletohelpyou.
MaryBlakemustbehomebynow.
MaryBlakeoughttobehomebynow.
Youcan’thaveanydifficultygettingthetickers.
Yououghtn’ttohaveanydifficultygettingthetickets.e)用must表示“必然”,也是一种推测或推断,其口气最为肯定,一般用于肯定陈述句:
Allmenmustdie.
Carelessreadingmustgivepoorresults.
Itmustbeverylatebecausethestreetsarequitedeserted.
Yourfathermustbeexpectingyouhome.f)如果是推测过去的事态,则用“must+不定式完成体”:
Youmusthaveleftyourhandbaginthetheatre.
Hereyesarered.Shemusthavebeencrying.g)表示推测的must的否定形式是can’t而不是mustnot:
IfFreddidn’tleavehomebeforefive,hecan’tbethereyet.
Hecan'thavebeentoyourhome.Hedoesn’tknowyouraddress.4(表示“预见”和“预测”
A.
IwillbeadifferentpersonwhenIliveinEngland.
Wewillhaveagreattimeifwegototheparty.
Youwillbehearingfromme.
Whatwillyoudowhenthewarisover?
She’llprobablylastlongerthanyouwill.
TheshowwillopenonFriday.
Itwillraintomorrow.
WillitdisturbyouifIkeepthelamponforabit?
I’llbookatableatFrancesco’s.
I’llcomeinafterchurchandgiveyouahand.
We’llgotothepartyifweareinvited.c)在当代美国英语中will/shall几乎全部为will/should或者’ll/’d所取代。
Ishallneverdothatagain.
Weshallcatchthecriminalswherevertheyhidethemselves.
Shallwego?
ShallIhelpyou?
B.
a)表示“推测”(predictability),除用should,oughtto和must外,还可用will/would。
又次于will:
Theyshould/oughttobehomebynow.
Theywouldbehomebynow.
Theywillbehomebunow.
Theymustbehomebunow.
A:
Who’sthatmanoverthere?
B:
ThatwillbeGeorge,nodoubt.ThatwouldbeGeorge,Iexpect.
Alionwillattackamanonlywhenhungry.
Paulinewillworkalldawithoutarest.He’llstayinthelaboratoryfordaysandnightsuntiltheexperimentisfinished.
Oilwillfloatonwater.
Pigswilleatanything.
A.
