     ThehorrorstoryclosesttoAlfredHitchcock'sheartwasnevertold.AHollywoodstudiobrutallykilledoffthefilmthedirectorhadnurturedforyearsbecauseitfearedhewasbecomingtoocontroversial.

     ItfollowedsuccesseswithfilmssuchasNorthbyNorthwest,madein1959,whichstarredCaryGrantinaprototype007role,andPsycho,madethefollowingyear,whichbecamefamousforitsspinechillingshowermurder.Nownotesandotherdocumentsleft“bythemasterofsuspense”haveshownthatHitchcockwasnotcontenttorestonthereputationearnedbysuchclassicsandwasplanningtoreinventhimselfattheageof68.

     Kaleidoscopewouldhavefeaturedahandsomepsychopathandhisfemalepursuer.Theplotwasbasedonthetrue-lifestoryofNevilleHeath,asadistic28-year-oldRAFofficerhangedin1946forthesexualassaultandsavagemurderoftwoyoungwomen.

     Filmexpertswhohaveseenthedetailednotesandpreliminaryfootagesaytheyshow“Hitch”wasthinkingofideasthatwereyearsaheadoftheirtime,andanticipatingtheapproachofmoviesmadeinthelate1960sand1970ssuchasEasyRiderandMeanStreets.

    FourreelsoffilmwereshotinafeasibilitystudybutthentheentireprojectwasscupperedbyexecutivesasUniversalStudioswhosaiditwastoodrasticachangeindirection.

    Thereels,alongwithHitchcock'swrittendescriptionsofthefilm,werefoundbyDanAuiler,afilmhistorianwhowassiftingthroughthehugecollectionofpapersthatHitchcock'sdaughterPatriciadonatedtotheAcademyofMotionPictureArtsandSciencesinLosAngles.“IfKaleidoscopehadbeenreleaseditcouldhavebeen oneofHitch'sgreatest movies,”Hesaid.

    ThepreliminaryreelswereshotinNewYorkin1967.Afterediting,therewasabout10minutesofscreentime.Thefirstsceneshowsanudemodelinherapartmentandthesecond,inanartist'sstudio,showstheyoungkillermeetingthemodel.Inabreakwithtradition,Hitchcock,whoturnedCaryGrantandGraceKellyintoscreenheartthrobs,proposedusingunknownactors.

    Auilerhasincludedadescriptionofthefilm—andHitchcock'shopesforitsimpactonhiscareer—inhisnewbook,Hitchcock'sSecretDiaries.Thefilmdirectordiedin1980attheageof80.

    “HitchcockwasenormouslyimpressedbythenewwaveofEuropeanfilm-makersandwantedtoreinventtheHitchcockfilmatanagewhenmostpeoplearecontenttoenjoyaquietretirement,”saidAuiler.“HeneverquiteforgaveUniversalandwhenhewasfilmingtheSeventiesfilmFrenzyheshotitentirelyinLondontolessenthestudio'scontrol.”
