ChoosingaperfectOracleRACconfiguration

WehavedonethepreparationandgoneaboutinstallingtheOCFS2andASMonourRHEL4.2servers.OracleRACisgrowinginpopularityandIlikedthispageatOraclemyself.Here,youcangetpre-tested,documentedbestpracticesofinstallingOracleonLinuxbasedsystems.Inaddition,somegoodrecommendations,fromthisauthoronInfostor,willhelpcompaniesdecidewhattogofor.IlikethequoteinwhichhesaysthatyoucanalsodeployRAConsystemsbesidesLinux（whichIwillbedocumentinghereasanongoingefforttodemoRAConSolaris,HP-UXandAIXserversaswell）.

GettingtheOracleRACsoftware

Wehavegonethroughthisseveraltimes,butjusttokeepyouintheloop,gotoPart6togetallthenecessarysoftwareyouneed.

Nowgoaheadandunzipallthefiles,whileloggedonasan"Oracle"user,into/tmp/orasoftdirectory（youarefreetochoosethedirectory,Inameitorasofttoavoidanyconfusionwhenlookingforthefiles）.

Wearetalkingaboutthesethreefilesandwillgoaheadandunziptheminthe/tmp/orasoftfolder

OKnowmakesurethatyouareloggedinasuser"Oracle,"andhaveunsetacoupleofparameterssuchasORACLE_HOME,etc.andallowforxserverconnectionsforaccessfromanyconsole.

Afterbeingloggedinasroot,dothefollowing:

ThenlogonasOracleandfollowthestepsasdetailedoutintheprintscreens:

Welcomescreen,clicknext.

Specifyinventorydirectoryandcredentials.Wechoose/u01/app/oracle/oraInventoryandspecify"dba"astheoperatingsystemusername.

Theprimarynodewhereyouarerunningtheinstallerwillbepickedupbytheinstallerandyouwillhavetospecifytheadditionalnode（s）byclickingthe"Add"button:

Installerruns:

Whentheinstallationisalmostdone,youwillbepromptedtorunorainstRoot.shandroot.shscripts.Youwillhavetoopenanewconsole（donotdoitinthesameconsoleasyourinstaller!

）beginningfromtheprimarynodewhereyouarecarryingtheinstallationandloggedinas"root"runthescript.

Nowgothethe/u01/app/oracle/oraInventorydirectoryandrunorainstRoot.sh.YouhavetodothisonALLNODES!

Asyoucansee,itchangesthepermissionsoftheoraInventoryandassignsDBAthegroupnameofthesamedirectory.

Therearemanydiscussionsaboutmiscounts,specificallytotheVMwareenvironment（likeVMwareServerORWorkstation）,wheretheoverheadmightjustnotbesupportiveenoughtoallowforafullandrobustfunctioningofourRAC.ThisisalsonecessarywhenrunningDBCAinordertoinstallourdatabase.Notdoingsomightresultinanora-03113error.

Whatactuallyistheproblemthen?

InVMwareyoumightencounterslowerdiskresponsiveness（dependingonhowfastandwhatconfigurationyouhaveforyourdisks,IhadsuccessonanoldserverwithRAID0andproblemswithaRAID5/SANdisk）.However,thisdoesnothavetobethecaseforVMwareRACtestbed,itcanalsooccurinapoorlyselectedhardwareconfiguration.TheCSSmiscounthasadefaultvalueof60andhappenstobeabittoosmallfortheCSStomisstheheartbeatandeventuallyendingupevictingthenodeandthusthrowingtheora-03113error.BeginningwiththeOracle10gR1series,thealgorithmhaschangedtoallowalengthiertimeout.Ihavehadsuccesswith300,butyoucangoashighas600.Sonow,thequestionarisesofhowtodoit.Ifyouhaven’tdoneit,doitnowbydoing:

Youdoseethattheclscfgcomplainsthatthemiscountmustbebelow360andthatiswhenIwentlookingforthetradeoff,tryingtosetitjustbelow300.Moreover,afterdoingsoyouwillneedtorunthisroot.shonALLNODES!

DespitetheerrorofthatONS（NotificationServicesdaemon）,Iwasabletosuccessfullyconcludetheinstallation.ThelastnoderunstheVIPCA（VIPConfigurationAgent）.

Conclusion:

Inthisarticle,wetookourfirststepstowardsinstallingtheOracleClusterwareandasyousawyourself,theinstallationwentfine.Thatwasduetothepainstakingandyetrewardingpreparatoryeffortsthatweputinthebeginningofourseries.Inournextarticle,wewillgoaheadandinstallOraclesoftwareandtheCompanionCD.ThenwewilltakeonourDBCA（DatabaseCreationAssistant）.InourOracleRACadministrationseries,wewillgoaheadandadministertheclusterwarecomponents.AlthoughIhadstartedthisseriestodoaWindowsandLinuxRACinstallation,IamtemptedtolookatHP-UX,AIXandSolaristoo,hopefullymyVMwareserverwillgetoutofbetaandIcangetonwiththeseconfigurationsaswell.
