WhydidStarbucksoriginallypursueastrategyoflicensingforinternationalexpansioninJapanandfurtherwhydidStarbucksretreatfromthatstrategyoflicensingandreverttojointventuresandsubsidiaries?
Starbucksbelievedthatthistechniquewouldallowittoachievethequickestpaththeinternationalexpansion.Althoughmuchmorewouldbeputintofindingtheproperlicensee,therewouldbelittleneedtoinvestconsiderablecapital.
StarbucksbelievedthattheindividualisticnatureofaStarbucksstorehadtobemanagedcarefully.Alicensingstrategy,althoughgivingittheopportunitytoexpandinternationally,didnotallowthestrongcontrolStarbucksfeltwasnecessaryforsuccess.Astrategyofjointventuresandsubsidiaries,wherehands-oncontrolisexpectedandrequired,wasclearlymorefittingtotheoperationalphilosophy.
ThesuccessofStarbucksreliedonstrongcontrolattheretaillevel,includingstorelayoutandthetrainingofpersonnel.Thecaseshowsthatmorethanonestrategyforinternationalexpansionmayberequireddependingonthemechanicsofthecompanyandthenatureofthecountryentered.
