Amongmanywords,including“grey”and“flavour,”BritishEnglishcanbeseengoingdownaround1880,whenAmericanEnglishbegantocrossintowideruse.Sincethen,English-languagepublicationshavepreferred“gray”and“flavor.”Andalthoughthereweresomefallsandrisesinuseovertheyears,theAmericanversionsofthesewordshaveremainedmorepopular.

TheAmericanwayofspellinghascontinuedtogrowinusageovertheyears,with“liter(升)”passing“litre”around1900,and“center”becomingthemorecommonchoiceover“centre”in1913.“1913markedaturningpointintheusageoftheBritishspelling,astheAmericanversionbecamemorefrequentlyusedinpublications,”thereportexplains.ThiswasjustayearbeforethebeginningofWorldWarI(1914-1918).

DuringWorldWarI,theworldalsobegantoprefer“defense”overtheBritishEnglishversion,“defence.”Aroundthesametime,useofthespelling“airplane”increasedquicklyover“aeroplane.”Atthetime,theword“fiber”wasalsoquicklybecomingmorepopularthanitsBritishversion.

But,onewordwasunfamiliartoeithertheBritishorAmericans—“gaol.”Thisearlyformof“jail(监狱)”haslostitspopularityoverthepast200years,andisnowhardlyused.“IftherewereeverawordthatfailedtocrosstheAtlanticandreachAmerica,itmustbe“gaol,”thereportsays.“Eversincethemiddleofthe19thcenturyithasbeenlesspopularasevenBritaindislikedtheoldspelling.”
