Iwantyouto,foramoment,thinkaboutplayingagameofMonopoly.Exceptinthisgame,thatcombinationofskill,talentandluckthathelpedearnyousuccessingames,asinlife,hasbeenrenderedirrelevant,becausethisgame'sbeenrigged,andyou'vegottheupperhand.You'vegotmoremoney,moreopportunitiestomovearoundtheboard,andmoreaccesstoresources.
Andasyouthinkaboutthatexperience,Iwantyoutoaskyourself:
Howmightthatexperienceofbeingaprivilegedplayerinariggedgamechangethewayyouthinkaboutyourselfandregardthatotherplayer?
So,weranastudyontheUCBerkeleycampustolookatexactlythatquestion.Webroughtinmorethan100pairsofstrangersintothelab,andwiththeflipofacoin,randomlyassignedoneofthetwotobearichplayerinariggedgame.Theygottwotimesasmuchmoney;whentheypassedGo,theycollectedtwicethesalary;andtheygottorollbothdiceinsteadofone,sotheygottomovearoundtheboardalotmore.
Andoverthecourseof15minutes,wewatchedthroughhiddencameraswhathappened.WhatIwanttodotoday,forthefirsttime,isshowyoualittlebitofwhatwesaw.You'lltohavetopardonthesoundquality,becauseagain,thesewerehiddencameras.Sowe'veprovidedsubtitles.

it'sthat,attheendofthe15minutes,weaskedtheplayerstotalkabouttheirexperienceduringthegame.AndwhentherichplayerstalkedaboutwhytheyhadinevitablywoninthisriggedgameofMonopoly...Theytalkedaboutwhatthey'ddonetobuythosedifferentpropertiesandearntheirsuccessinthegame.
Andtheybecamefarlessattunedtoallthosedifferentfeaturesofthesituation--includingthatflipofacoin--thathadrandomlygottenthemintothatprivilegedpositioninthefirstplace.Andthat'sareally,reallyincredibleinsightintohowthemindmakessenseofadvantage.

AndwhatmycolleaguesandIforthelastsevenyearshavebeendoingisstudyingtheeffectsofthesekindsofhierarchies.Whatwe'vebeenfindingacrossdozensofstudiesandthousandsofparticipantsacrossthiscountryisthatasaperson'slevelsofwealthincrease,theirfeelingsofcompassionandempathygodown,andtheirfeelingsofentitlement,ofdeservingness,andtheirideologyofself-interestincrease.
