TheJournalofCerealSciencepublishespapersoriginatinginanycountry.Papersdealingwithtopicsofonlyrestrictedlocalinterestwillnotbeaccepted,however,unlesstheinformationpresentedcanbedemonstratedtobeofgeneralapplicability.

TheJournalexiststoadvancescientificconceptsincerealscience,andthecontentofpaperspublishedwithinitmustbeconsistentwiththisgoal.Papersthatareessentiallyarchivalwillnotbeaccepted.

SubmissionofManuscripts

SubmissionforalltypesofmanuscriptstoJournalofCerealScienceproceedstotallyonline.ViatheElsevierEditorialSystemwebsiteforthisjournal,youwillbeguidedstep-by-stepthroughthecreationanduploadingofthevariousfiles.WhensubmittingamanuscripttoElsevierEditorialSystem,authorsneedtoprovideanelectronicversionoftheirmanuscript.Forthispurposeonlyoriginalsourcefilesareallowed,soPDFfilesarenotpermitted.Oncetheuploadingisdone,thesystemautomaticallygeneratesanelectronicproof,whichisthenusedforreviewing.Allcorrespondence,includingtheEditor'sdecisionandrequestforrevisions,willbebye-mail.Authorsmaysendqueriesconcerningthesubmissionprocess,manuscriptstatus,orjournalprocedurestotheEditorialOfficeatjcs@.

ThemainactivityoftheJournalinfulfillingitsmissionisthepublicationoforiginalandinnovativeresearchpapersofahighscientificstandard.Thesepapersshould:

（a）reportaspecificidentifiableadvanceinknowledgethathasnotbeenpublishedelsewhere;（b）claimnomorethancanbesubstantiatedbytheresults;（c）belogicallyconsistentbothwithinthemselvesandwithintheexistingbodyofknowledge;（d）giveenoughinformationtoallowtheresearchtobetestedandrepeatedbycompetentresearcherselsewhere;and（e）giveduereferencetopreviouslypublishedworkrelevanttotheresearchdescribed.

Rapidcommunications:

Theseareintendedasvehiclesforconveyingnewsofadvancesincerealscience,thescientificimportanceofwhichmeritspreferentialtreatment.Scientificimportanceandnoveltyoftheinformationwillbethekeycriteriainjudgingtheiracceptability.

Papersarepeer-reviewedbyindependentreviewerswithappropriateexpertiseinthesubjectareaofthepaper.Thereviewprocessisanonymous,althoughthereviewers'recommendationsandcommentsareusuallytransmittedtotheauthorstohelptheminrevisingtheirmanuscripts（whichisalmostinvariablyrequired）.TheEditorsandreviewersattempttomakethereviewsystemasconstructiveandsympatheticaspossible,althoughtheymust,atthesametime,attempttoensurethatonlypapersofahighstandardarepublished.Manycontributorsacknowledgethehelptheyreceivefromthereviewprocessinimprovingtheirpapers.NorevisionofRapidCommunicationswillbeallowedinordertoensurerapidpublication.

Aswellasadvisingonthepaper'sacceptability,thereviewersarealsoaskedtogiveapriorityrating,whichwillhelptogivethehighestprioritytopapersthatrepresentimportantnewadvances.Papersrecommendedforpublicationwillbecategorisedas:

（a）beingofoutstandingscientificstandardandrepresentinganimportantadvanceintheparticularsubjectarea;（b）beingofhighscientificstandardbutrepresentingalogicalorpredictableextensionofpreviousresearch;（c）presentingnecessaryinformationandofgoodscientificstandardbutbeingessentiallyconfirmatoryinnature.

OriginalityofResearch

SubmissionofapaperforconsiderationforpublicationintheJournalofCerealSciencewillbeheldtoimplythatthematerialrepresentstheresultsoforiginalresearchorofanoriginalinterpretationofexistingknowledgenotpreviouslypublished,thatitisnotunderconsiderationforpublicationelsewhere,andthat,ifacceptedforpublicationintheJournalofCerealScience,itwillnotbepublishedelsewhereinthesameform,inEnglishoranyotherlanguagewithouttheconsentoftheEditorialBoardandthePublisher.

ResubmissionofRevisedManuscripts

Ifamanuscriptreturnedtotheauthorforrevisionisnotresubmittedwithin6weeks（makingdueallowanceforpostagetimes）,itmayonre-submissionbedeemedanewpaperandthedateofreceiptalteredaccordingly.

PreparationofManuscripts

Thestandardofpreparationofthemanuscriptdeterminestoaconsiderableextentthespeedofprocessingandpublication.Authorsareadvisedintheirownintereststoreadthesenotescarefullyandtoensurethattheirmanuscriptmeetstherequirements;theyarealsourgedtoensurethatthemanuscriptdoesnotcontainsuperfluousmaterial.Manuscriptsshouldmeettheobviouscriteriaofrelevance,originalityandscientificvalidity.Twootherimportantattributesshouldalsobeconsidered:

first,papersshouldbeintelligibletoaninternationalreadership,manyofwhommaynotbeexpertsinparticularspecialistfieldswiththeirattendantassumptionsandjargon.Second,papersshouldcontainadequateandconciseinformationtoenableacompetentresearchworkertoreproducethework.Authorsareurgedtoreadtheirownmanuscriptsobjectivelyandwiththesamecriticalapproachthattheywouldemployinreadingtheworkofothers.

Allcategoriesofmanuscriptshouldbetypedonstandard-sized（preferablyA4）paperononesideofthepaperonly,triple-spacedwithtwowidemargins（atleast3cmallround）.Pagesshouldbenumbered,andeachlineonthepageshouldalsobenumbered.Thefirstpageshouldcontain:

theTitleindicatingthesubjectmatterasbrieflyaspossibleand,inanycase,innotmorethan250characters,includingspaces;namesofauthors;address（es）ofthelaboratory（ies）wheretheworkwasdone;fullpostalande-mailaddressforcorrespondence;arunningheadline（max.40charactersandspaces）;analphabetically-arrangedlistofallabbreviationsused;currentaddressesofauthors,ifdifferentfromabove.Thetextsofdifferenttypesofpaperwilldifferandguidelinesforeacharesetoutbelow.

ThelanguageoftheJournalisEnglish（ConciseOxfordDictionary,Webster'sNewCollegiateDictionary）.Toexpeditepublicationandtoavoidambiguitiesanderrors,authorswhosefirstlanguageisnotEnglish,arestronglyadvisedtohavetheirmanuscriptcheckedbyanEnglish-speakingcolleaguewhoisknowledgeableaboutwrittenEnglishandEnglishgrammar.ContributorsfromNorth,CentralandSouthAmericamayuseAmericanspellingsiftheysowish.AuthorsfromallothercountriesshoulduseEnglishspellings.Forthelatter,'s'spellingsarepreferredinword
