IwishIhadaskedmyselfwhenIwasyounger.Mypathwassotrackedthatinmy8th-gradeyearbook,oneofmyfriendspredicted—accurately—thatfouryearslaterIwouldenterStanford.AndIenrolledatStanfordLawSchool,whereIcompetedevenharderforthestandardbadges(徽章)ofsuccess.Thehighestprizeinalawstudent’sworldisunambiguous:

theSupremeCourtclerkship.Iwassoclosetowinningthislastcompetition.IfonlyIgottheclerkship,Ithought,Iwouldbesetforlife.ButIdidn’t.Atthetime,Iwasfrustrated.
