Schwartz,MichelMühlethaler,andtheircolleaguesLaurenceBayerandIrinaConstantinescuaskedtwelveadultvolunteerstonaponacustommadebedor“experimentalhammock”thatcouldeitherremainstillorrockgently.Allparticipantsweregoodsleeperswhodidn’ttypicallynapanddidnotsufferfromexcessivesleepinessduringtheday.Eachparticipanttooktwo45•minuteafternoonnaps,onewiththebedstillandonewiththebedinmotion,whiletheirbrainactivitywasmonitored.

“Weobservedafastertransitiontosleepineachandeverysubjectintheswingingcondition,”Mühlethalersaid.“Surprisingly,wealsoobservedadramaticboostingofcertaintypesofsleeprelatedbrainwaves.”

Morespecifically,rockingincreasedthelengthofstageN2sleep,aformofnon•rapideyemovementsleep

thatnormallyoccupiesabouthalfofagoodnight’ssleep.Therockingbedalsohadalastingeffectonbrainactivity,increasingslowbrainwavesandburstsofactivityknownassleepspindles(纺锤体).
