Instead,whatuniversitiesshouldfocusonisdevelopingcriticalthinking.Anyonecanmemorizefactsandgeton-jobtraining,butnoteveryonecanthinkandanalyze.Thisisafarmoreimportantskillintherealworld.Tobeabletoprocessinformation,understanditanduseit,thesearetheskillsouruniversitiesshouldfocusonbuilding.

Thatisnottosaythatuniversitiesshouldnotpayanyattentiontotheworkplace.Ofcourseallgraduateswanttofindgoodwork.Butifyouaskmostpeopleintheworkplacetoday,theywilltellyouthatthespecificskillsrequiredfortheirjobswerelearnedon-site.Andifyouaskmostemployerswhattheyarelookingforinemployees,theywilltellyouthatitisamindthatcan“thinkoutsideofthebox”.

Butontheotherhand,thereistheriskthattakingtimeoffmaycloudthestudent’smindbypresentinghim/herwithtoomanyoptions.Youngmindsareimpressionableandsometimestheyneedstructure.Thedesiretogobacktoschoolafterbeinginsocietymaybecomelessappealingandthiscouldnegativelyimpacttheirlong-termjobopportunities.

Intheend,Ifeelthatitcomesdowntowhattheindividualwantstoachieveinlife.Thereisno“onesizefitsall”prescription.Personally,ifIhadtheresources,Iwouldmakeeveryefforttoexperiencenewplacesandchallengemyselfinnewways,butalsocommittoauniversityeducationafterward.
