General

CompliancewiththisSpecificationshallnotrelievetheSupplieroftheresponsibilityforfurnishingequipmentthatisproperlydesignedandconstructedandsuitableforallspecifiedoperationconditions.Thedesign,installationandtestingofinstruments,controlsystemsandrelatedequipmentshallbeinaccordancewithrequirementsofthisspecification,unlesssupersededbymorestringentlocalregulations.Allsimilarinstrumentationshallbebythesamemanufacturerforallunits.

ApplicableSpecifications

Instrumentationshallconformtothespecificrequirementsofthisspecification,aswellastotherequirementsofallotherapplicablespecificationsandstandards,unlessotherwisedefinedbyOwnerspecificationsorotherprojectdocumentsspecifyingexceptionsormodifications.

EnclosuresandConnections

Instrumentenclosuresshallbesuitablefortheelectricalareaclassificationandenvironmentwhereinstalled.

AllthreadedpipeconnectionsshallbetaperedinaccordancewithASME/ANSIB1.20.1.

Electricalconduitconnectionsforfieldmountedinstrumentsanddevicesshallbeinternallythreaded.

Thesizeofterminalblocksandscrewsshallbeconsistentwiththewiresizeusedwiththem.Terminationsshallbeoneofthetypesdescribedbelow.Springtypeterminalsarenotacceptable.

Captivescrewterminalstripsusedwithspadetypewireends.

Materials

AllatmosphereexposedpartsshallresistenvironmentalconditionsasnotintheDataSheet.Cadmiumplatingisnotacceptable.

Allprocessfluidexposedparts,suchasBourdontubes,diaphragms,ballandtubularfloats,displacers,andbellowsshallresistthecorrosivepropertiesoftheprocessfluid.

Instrumentsinflammableortoxicserviceshallminimizeleakagewhenexposedtofire.Lowmeltingpointmetalmaterials,suchasaluminumandbrass,shallnotbeusedfortheconstructionofpressurebearingorbodyretainingparts.

DesignandPerformance

Fortransmittersandreceivers,thelowestvalueoftheratedsignalsshallcorrespondto0%ofrangeandthehighestvalueshallcorrespondto100%ofrange.

Analogelectronicsignaltransmissionrangeshallbe4-20mADCwithHARTcommunication.OtherrangesrequireOwnerapproval.

Themeansfortransmissionofforcesormotionthroughthepressureholdingpartsshallbeofthepositivesealtype,suchastorquetube,bellows,diaphragm,ormagneticcoupling.Magneticcouplingshallnotbeusedwithdifferentialpressureinstruments.

Transmitters,recorders,indicators,controllers,andtransducersshallmeetthefollowingperformancerequirements:

Maximummeasurementerrorshallnotexceed0.3%ofspan.

Hysteresisshallnotexceed0.3%ofspan.

Deadbandshallnotexceed0.25%ofspan.

Outputchangecausedby38°C(100°F)ambientshiftshallnotexceed1%ofupperrangelimit.

Differentialpressureinstrumentsshallmeetthefollowingrequirements:

Differentialpressureinstrumentsshallwithstanddirectorreverseover-rangeequaltofullstaticpressurerating,withoutaffectingcalibrationorhavinganyzeroshift.

Anyoutputchangecausedbyachangeinstaticpressureequalto100%ofpressureelementratingshallnotexceed1%ofspan.

Ameansforcalibrationoftransmitters,recorders,indicators,andtransducersshallbeprovidedtopermitadjustmentofthezeroandthespanoftheoutput.

Electronictransmittersshallbemicroprocessor-based(smart)typeforalluses,withHARTcommunicationcapabilitiesorOwner’sapprovedequivalent.

Electronictransmittersutilizingtwowire24VDCpowersuppliesshallbedesignedtooperatewith12VDCat20mAtoensureenoughavailableloopvoltagelossforlengthyinputwiring.

StandAloneController

Thepreferenceisforallcontrollerstobedesignedintoeitheralocalcontrolsystemorthemainfacilitycontrolsystem.StandalonecontrollersmaybeconsideredsubjecttotheapprovaloftheOwner.

InstrumentNameplateIdentification

Allinstrumentsshallhavethefollowinginformationonapermanentlyfastenedstainlesssteelnameplatewhereapplicabletagnumber,manufacturer’sname,model,serialnumber,pressurerating,instrumentrange,calibrationrange,certifications,voltage,frequencyandmaterialsofconstruction.Nameplatesshallbescrewedorrivetedtotheunit'sbodywithstainlesssteelhardwarealongwithasupplementalstainlesssteeltagwiredtotheinstrumentusingaminimumof18gauge316stainlesssteelwiredisplayingtheinstrumenttagnumber.Adhesivesshallnotbeusedasthesolemeansofattachment.

FailureRequirements

AllinstrumentsshallfailtothesafestpositionuponairorpowerfailureasshownontheP&IDs(PipingandInstrumentDiagrams).Projectpersonnelshallhavefinalapprovalofthefailurepositionofallinstrumentsandrelatedcomponents.Temperaturecontrollersshallfailinthesafestdirectionupontemperatureelementorpowercircuitfailure.

Suppliersofelectronicinstrumentationandmicroprocessor-basedcontrolsystemsshallsupplythefollowinginformationsothatfailureactionanalysiscanbemade:

Maximumtime(secondsorminutes)thepowersourcecanbeinterruptedwithoutdisruptionofcontrolcircuitoperations.

Qualityofpowersupplyrequired(intermsofmaximumandminimumvoltagelevel)andmaximumripplethatcanbetolerated(inmillivolts,peak-to-peak).

Actionoftheinstrumentsuponre-establishmentofpower;forexample,drivefull-scaleup,drivefull-scaledownorlockinplace.

InstrumentLocations

Thelocationofinstrumentsandinstrumentconnections,includingterminalandjunctionboxes,controlequipmentandreliefvalves,shallpermiteasyaccessfromdeck/grade,permanentplatformsorstairwaysforoperation,inspectionandmaintenance.Locationsshallalsominimizethepossibilityofdamagefrompassingorfallingobjectsandfromfire.Apermanentplatformmaynotberequiredwhereaclearareaallowsaccessfromaladderorportableplatformtoaninstrumentorelementnotmorethan4.5m(15ft)abovegrade,however,allinstrumentssomountedshallbesubjecttoOwnerapproval.AllappropriateconstructiondrawingsandmodelsshallbereviewedbytheOwnerinstrumentationengineer.Allindicatinginstrumentsshallbeinstalledtobelegiblefromgradeand/ortherelatedoperationalarea.

ElectricalAreaClassifications

Allelectricalorelectronicinstrumentationequipmentshallconformtotherequirementsforinstallationinaccordancewiththeareaelectricalclassification.Enclosuresorcablingandgroundingsystemsforallfield-mountedorlocalpanel-mountedelectricalorelectronicinstruments(orinstrumentshavingelectricalconnections)shallconformtotherequirementsoftheelectricalclassificationoftheareaofinstallation.

Specialattentionshallbegiventothoseinstrumentinstallationsthatmeetallareaclassificationsandcoderequirementsbutmayserveasapathforflammablegasesorliquidstounclassifiedareasevenundernormalconditions.Thesepathsmaybeformedby:
