TheLouvre,inParis,France,hasalmost275,000worksofart.Itcontainssomeofthemostfamousworksofartinthehistoryoftheworld,includingtheMonaLisabyLeonardodaVinci.

Thisimpressivebuildingremainedemptyuntil1527,whenFrancoisⅠdecidedthathewanteditforhisprivatepalace.FrancoisⅠwasacollectorofearlyItalianRenaissanceartatthetime,andalreadyownedtheMonaLisa.However,hewouldnotmoveintotheLouvreuntilitwascompletelyrenovatedandmadeevenmoresplendidthanithadbeenduringtheruleofCharlesⅤ.

Unfortunately,FrancoisⅠdiedbeforetheworkwascompleted,buttheworkcontinueduntilthedeathoftheheadarchitect.Afterwards,severalgenerationsofFrenchroyaltylivedinthepalaceuntilLouisⅩⅣ,thelastoftheFrenchrulerstocalltheLouvrehome,leftin1682.TheLouvre,however,wasfarformabandoned.Forabout30yearsafterLouisⅩⅣ’sdeathin1715,theLouvrebecamethehomeofartistsandscholars.Itsartcollectiongrewfromabout200paintingsin1643toabout2,500worksofartin1715.

Itwasacenterofcreativity,untilthepublicbegantobeadmittedin1793.ThroughouttheFrenchRevolutionandtheyearsruledbyNapole
