Abstract:

Languageisthekeystoneofculture.Withoutlanguage,culturewouldnotbepossible.Ontheotherhand,languageisinfluencedandshapedbyculture,itreflectsculture.Becauseofculturaldifferencesmisunderstandingsmayarise,althoughthelanguageusedincommunicationmaybefaultless.Solearningaforeignlanguagewellmeansmorethanmerelymasteringthepronunciations,grammarsandvocabularies.Itmeanslearningtounderstandtheirculture.TodayinChina,itisimportanttoincorporatecultureteachinginEnglishteaching.TheresearchofcultureteachinginEnglishlanguageteachingmainlyreferstothreeaspects,thenecessitytoteach,whattoteachandhowtoteach.Thisarticlereviewsbrieflythedefinitionsofcultureandintroducestherelationbetweencultureandlanguage.Italsostatesthecontentofcultureteachingandtheobjectivesofcultureteachingandthestrategiesofcultureteaching.ItfurtherexpoundsthatthefinalobjectiveistoachievethelanguageacquisitionofEnglish-learnersthroughcultureteaching.

摘要:

语言是文化的基石,没有语言,文化就无法存在。

从另一方面看,文化影响着语言,语言表现并反映着文化。

虽然应用于交际时的语言没有错误,但由于文化的差异,误解也就随之产生。

所以想要学好一门语言,不仅要掌握它的发音,语法,词汇,还要学会了解它的文化。

今天,在中国,英语教学中的文化教育已日益重要。

英语教学中对文化教育的研究主要包括三个方面,为什么教,教什么,以及如何教。

这篇论文主要概括了文化的定义,文化与语言的关系,文化教学的内容,目标及方法,进一步说明英语学习者的最终的目标就是通过文化教学实现语言习得。

I.Introduction

WhenwetalkingaboutEnglishteaching,mostofpeoplewillthinkaboutthosebasiclanguageteaching.Namely,listening,speaking,readingandwriting,butignoretheculturefactors.Peoplethosewhohavetheabilityofthebasiclanguageandcommunicationstillmakesomemistakescausedbyculturefactors.So,cultureteachingshouldgainmoreattentionofeducationfield.

Theteachingofcultureisanindispensablepartsofforeignlanguageteaching.Learningaforeignlanguagewellmeansmorethanmerelymasteringthepronunciation,grammar,vocabularyandlanguagefunction.Itmeanslearningtoseetheworldasnativespeakersofthatlanguagedoes;learningthewaysinwhichtheirlanguagereflectstheideas,customs,andbehavioroftheirsociety;learningtounderstandtheir“languagemind”.Learningalanguage,infact,isinseparablefromlearningitsculture.

Cultureisacomplicatedsocialphenomenon.Itexistseverywhere;itcoverseverythinganditisinvolvedinalltheaspectsofsociallife.Thus,itisconsideredasthesumofalltheachievementgotfromthesocialandspirituallife.Generallyspeaking,culturecanbedividedintotwoparts:

oneisFormalCulture,orKnowledgeCulture.Itincludesalltheaccomplishmentsinsocialandphysicalscienceandhighlyreflectshumans’materialandmoralcivilization.TheotherisCommonCulture,orsayCommunicativeCulture.Ithasaseriousofdifferentfeaturesindailylife,suchascustoms,ceremonies,mannersandholidays,etc.Inaddition,people’sactionsorspeechesalldirectlyorindirectlyreflecttheirself-cultivation.

Sincethe1990s,culturalstudieshavebeendiscussedmorefrequently,andthereisregainedinterestandunderstandinginEnglishlanguageteachingandresearch.OurEnglishlanguagecurriculumhasespeciallyacceptedcultureteachingasoneoftheobjectivesinlanguageteaching.

II.TheRelationshipbetweenLanguageandCulture

1.DifferentDefinitionsofCulture

What’s“culture”?

Itisestimatedthatover200definitionshavebeenproposed.H.NedSeelyeputsforwardanunderstandofcultureontwolevels:

oneisculturewithabig“C”whichincludesliterature,arts,music,architecturephilosophyandachievementofscienceandtechnology;theotherisculturewithalittle“c”whichrefersto“lifeofapopulation”,thatis,customs,traditions,andsocialorganizations.Thismeanscultureincludesnotonlysuchmaterialthingsasarts,music,andarchitecture,butalsonon-materialthingssuchascustoms,traditions.Puttingitsimply,culturereferstotheentirewayoflifeofasociety,“thewayofapeople”.

Thedefinitionofcultureconsistsbroadsensemeaningandnarrowsensemeaning.Thebroadsensedefinescultureas“thefeaturesofhumanbeings”.Butthenarrowsensedefinescultureas“alifestyleofhumancommunity”.Infact,thenarrowsensemeaningismoreapttocultureteaching.Accordingtothenarrowsensemeaning,cultureisakindofsocialheritage,whichpeoplehavecreatedforalongtime.Languageandculturehaveintimaterelations,thatis,everykindoflanguagehasitsowndeepculturalconnotationandeverylanguageistheimageofacertainkindofculture.

LiuRunqingandDengYanchangintheirbookdefinecultureasthetotalpatternofbeliefs,customs,institutionsobjectsandtechniquesthatcharacterizethelifeofahumancommunity.

2.TheRelationshipbetweenLanguageandCulture

Inforeignlanguageeducation,theimportantofteachingforeignculturehasbeenwidelyrecognized.However,therearediversepropositionandargumentaboutthepedagogicaltreatmentofculture.Howtoteachcultureinforeignlanguageeducationistheanswerthatreliesonourunderstandingoftherelationsbetweenhomecultureandforeignculture,therelationsbetweenlanguageandculture.

Inthepast,peoplehaveawrongconceptthatlearninglanguageisjustmasteritspronunciation,grammar,vocabularyandlanguagefunction,butignoreitsculturefactorswhichcancausemisunderstanding.JustlikePolitzersaidthatifweteachlanguagewithoutteachingatthesametimethecultureinwhichitoperates,weareteachingmeaninglesssymbolsorsymbolstowhichthestudentattachesthewrongmeaning.

Languageisapartofcultureandplaysaveryimportantroleinit.Languageandcultureareinseparable.Withoutlanguage,culturewouldnotbepossible.

Manylinguistsexploretherelationbetweenlanguageandculture.Nidaholdtheviewthat“everylanguageformweusehascarriesmeaningsthatarenotinthesamesensebecauseitisassociatedwithcultureandcultureismoreextensivethanlanguage.’’

Languageisavehicleofculturetransmission.Differentlanguagemayreflectdifferentcultures;differentculturesentaildifferentlanguageexpression.Idioms,proverbsandmetaphorsindifferentlanguagederivedfromdifferentorigins,alsodemonstrateculturaldifferences.Differentlanguagemayhavedifferentidiomsowingtodifferentlivingenvironments,socialconventionsandliteraturetradition,etc.thus,languagelearnerscannottrulymasterthelanguageuntiltheyhavealsomasteredtheculturalcontextsinwhichthelanguageoccurs.

Onthewhole,therelationbetweenlanguageandculturedeterminestheimportantofcultureteaching.Therelationoflanguagetocultureisthatofparttowhole.Languagereflectscultureandbeinfluencedandshapedbyculture.

III.ThePurposeandContentofCultureTeaching

1.ThePurposeofCultureTeaching

Themodernsocietyacceleratesthecirculationofmaterialandculturalproducts.Itbringsallthenationsintoaglobalvillageanditmakescross-culturalcommunicationanindispensablepartinallnations’life.However,theculturaldifferencesarethebarriersincross-culturalcommunication.Sotheworldisconcernedonhowtoremovethebarriersincross-culturalcommunication.Languageandculturearecloselyrelated,eachinfluencingandshapingtheother.Inlearninglanguageknowledge,toacquaintoneselfwiththeknowledgeofcultureisthekeypoint.Onecanhardlylearnalanguagewellwithoutknowingtheculturalpatternandrulesofthetargetlanguage.ItisnecessarytoincorporatecultureintotheEnglishclassroom,Inordertofosterthestudents’abilitiesincross-culturalcommunication.

2.TheContentofCultureTeaching

Thecontentofcultureteachingisusuallyincludedtwoaspects,cultureknowledgeandcultureunderstanding.Lackingeitherofthem,learnersofdifferentculturallevelsmaymisunderstandthemeaningandproducesomepragmaticerrors.And,itiscultureawarenessthatlinksthetwoaspects.Theformeristoacquireculturalinformationoftargetlanguage,thelatter,toknowandaccepttheotherculture,tobehaveappropriatelyintheotherculturalenvironmentwithitsculturalknowledge.Itmakeslearnerstobeawareoftheirunderstandingandknowledgeofculturaldifferencestodiscussproblemstheymeetduringtheirlearningandfinallytoimprovecross-culturalcommunicationcompetence.
