HisworksreflecthisallegianeetothechurchofEngland,andisconcernedwiththequestfortheimmortalelement,thestillnesswithintimeorhistory.Thus,theworksarecharacterisedbyaphilosophicalandemotionalcalmquiteincontrasttothedespairandsufferingoftheearlyworks.
