Drinkingishealthy,exerciseishealthy,anddoingalittleofbothisevenhealthier,Danishresearchersreported.

Peoplewhoneitherdrinkmoreexercisehavea30to49percenthigherriskofheartdiseasethanpeoplewhodooneorbothoftheactivities,theresearcherssaidintheEuropeanHeartJournal.

“Themainfindingisthereseemstobeanadditionalbeneficialeffectofdrinkingonetotwodrinksperdayanddoingatleastmoderatephysicalactivity,”saidMortenGronbaekoftheUniversityofSouthernDenmark,wholedthestudy.

Severalmajorstudieshavefoundthatlighttomoderatedrinkinguptotwodrinksaday—isassociatedwithalowerriskofheartdisease,andsomehavealsofoundthisleadstoalowerriskofsomecancers.ButtheDanishstudy,oneofthelargestofitskindtoexaminethecombinedeffectofdrinkingandexercise,foundtherewereadditionalprotectiveeffectsgainedfromdoingboth.

Theresearcherscollectedinformationonthedrinkingandexercisehabitsofnearly12,000peopleaged20yearsorolderbetween1981and1983.Overthenext20years,some1,200oftheparticipantsdiedfromheartdiseaseandabout5,900diedfromothercauses.

Nondrinkershada30percentto31percenthigherriskofheartdiseasecomparedtomoderatedrinkers,nomatterwhattheamountofphysicalactivitytheyundertook.Moderateconsumptionwasdefinedasbetween1to14drinksperweek.Butteetotalers(绝对禁酒者)whoexercisedatleastmoderatelywereabletoreducetheirriskofheartdisease,animportantfindingforpeoplewhorefusetodrinkbecauseofreligiousbeliefsorotherhealthissuessuchaspregnancy,theresearcherssaid.

Peoplewhohadthelowestriskofdyingfromanycausewerephysicallyactive,moderatedrinkerswhilethoseathighestriskwerethephysicallyinactive,heavedrinkers,thestudyfound.
