Abstract
Creativityresearchisalargeandvariedfieldinwhichthesubjectischaracterizedonmanydifferentlevels.Thearrivalofdigitalmediaandcomputationaltoolshasopenedupnewpossibilitiesforcreativepractice.Thecuttingedgeinthedigitalartsisahighlyfertilegroundfortheinvestigationofcreativityandtheroleofnewtechnologies.Thedemandsofsuchworkoftenrevealthelimitationsofexistingtechnologiesandopenthedoortodevelopingnewapproachesandtechniques.Thisprovidesthecreativityresearcherwithopportunitiestounderstandthemulti-dimensionalcharacteristicsofthecreativeprocess.Atthesametime,itplacesnewdemandsuponthecreatorsofthetechnologicalsolutionsandpushesforwardourunderstandingofthefuturerequirementsofcreativetechnologies.Thispaperisconcernedwiththenatureofcreativityandthedesignofcreativityenhancingcomputersystems.Theresearchhasmulti-disciplinaryfoundationsinhuman–computerinteractionandcreativepracticeinArt,Design,ScienceandEngineering.Asaresultofaseriesofstudiesofcreativepeopleandtheassociateddevelopmentsintechnology,astrategyforpractice-basedresearchhasevolvedinwhichresearchandpracticeareinterdependentactivitiesthathavemutualbenefitsaswellasdistinctiveoutcomes.Thispaperchartsthedevelopmentofthatco-evolutionaryprocessfromthefoundationstudiestorecentoutcomesofamajorprojectinartandtechnologycollaboration.ThenotionoftheStudioasalaboratoryinthefieldisintroducedandanewmethodologyforsystematicpractice-basedresearchispresented.Fromtheresultsoftheinvestigationsthattookplace,opportunitiesforthedevelopmentoftechnologyenvironmentsforcreativecollaborationareproposed.

Thisstudydeepensourknowledgeofcriticalsuccessfactorsintheinnovationprocessoflow-andmedium-technology(LMT)industries.Toaccomplishthis,itexploreshowtheinnovationprocessinLMTfirmsmaydependonnon-formalR&Dactivitiesandtheuseofexternalsources.TheempiricalanalysisisbasedonarepresentativepanelofSpanishmanufacturingfirms.Theresultsstronglysupporttheviewthatnon-R&Dactivitiessuchasdesign,theuseofadvancedmachineryandtrainingarecrucialtounderstandingtheinnovationprocessofanyfirm.Thestudyfinds,however,thattheimpactoftheseactivitiesisespeciallyimportantinLMTindustries,particularlyfortheachievementofproductinnovations.Theempiricalevidencealsorevealstheimportanceofexternalsourcessuchastheuseofconsultants,thehiringofpersonnel,collaborationagreementsandexternalR&D,withthegreatestdifferencesbetweenLMTandhigh-technology(HT)firmsbeingobservedinprocessinnovations.
