AccordingtotheU.S.ConsumerProductSafetyCommission,morethan9,000fireworksrelatedinjurieshappeneachyear.Ofthese,nearlyhalfarehead-relatedinjuries,withnearly30percentoftheseinjuriestotheeye.One-fourthoffireworkseyeinjuriesresultin3permanentvisionlossorblindness.Childrenarethemostcommonvictimsoffireworkabuse,withthosefifteenyearsoldoryoungeraccountingfor450percentoffireworkseyeinjuriesintheUnitedStates.Dr.Haganestimatesthathispracticeseesmorethan30injurieseachyearfromfireworks.
Evenfireworksthatmanypeopleconsidersaferepresentathreattotheeyes.Forchildrenundertheageoffive,apparentlyharmlesssparklersaccountforone-thirdofallfireworksinjuries.Sparklerscanbumatnearly2,000degreesFahrenheit.
