Thefrstdaywesattogetherinasmallauditorium,unawareofeachotherandofwhatlayahead.Weweretoldthatourconfdencewouldbeshattered,ourmindsblownaway,andourliveschangedforever.Stillsomewhatunmoved,wewerenotafraid.

BythesecondweekofMITESvaledictorians,nerds,bookworms,andtechiesalikewereleaningoneachother’sshouldersattwointhemorningcryingoverproblemsetstheyhadimaginedonlyinnightmares.Itisawellknownfactthathardtimesbringfriendsclosertogether,butIwouldhaveneverexpectedforthesestrangerstobecomemybestfriends,mysupportsystem,orevenmyfamily.www.liuxue.laThe16hoursdaysIwasaccustomedtoathomedidnotlastlong.Iwasgettinganaverageoffourhoursofsleeppernight,fnishingabookperweek,zoomingthroughsubjectsonceforeigntome,andconstructingasemiautonomousrobotfromdrillmotorsallatthesametime.

Wewereeachenrolledin5classes,myscheduleconsistedofIntroductoryPhysics,EngineeringDesign,Chemistry,firstyearCalculus,andHumanities.InthemonthandahalfwecompletedasemesterofPhysicsandChemistryeach,afullyearofCalculus,thematerialequivalenttoasemesterinAPliterature,andintroductorylevelengineering.TheworkwassointensethatwhenIenteredschoolinthefallIenrolledinsecondyearCalculus,andmaintainedtheonlyAinAPPhysics,havingnophysicsexperiencepriortoMITES.

SincethisprogramIhavenotbeensatisfiedwiththeregularcourseworkgivenatmyschool.Iamconstantlyonthelookoutfornewprogramstoenrollinandotherteams,clubs,andgroupstojoin.Thisacademicschoolyearmarksthepeakofmyinvolvementineducationalopportunities.IhavesomehowmanagedtofindtimefortheSpeechandDebateteam,ACEmentoringteam,swimteam,ScienceBowlteam,CaliforniaHonorsSocietyandScholarshipFederation,PlayProduction,JewishStudentUnion,gear-UPMentoringProgram,andfolkloricodancing.

MITESwasthemostchallengingexperienceofmylife.Theprogramisthesinglemostpivotalpointinmyacademicendeavorstodate.TheassistantswehadhadallgonethroughtheprogramandagreedthatevenincollegeatHarvard,MIT,Caltech,andPrinceton,nothingcameclose.ThemotivationandencouragementIgainedfromMITEShasfueledmyacademicpursuitsandpushedmetoraisethebar.

Engineersarenotknownforwritingbrilliantcollegeessays,butifallofthemhadtopicsasgoodasthatofauthorDavidWu,theymightdobetter.ThestoryofE2V2'sepicbattleagainstChromedomeishardtotop,butmoststudentsofascience/engineeringbentcantellaboutalabexperimentintheirpastthatwentwellorhorriblywrong.Theadvantageofwritingaboutalab—orarobotbattle—isthatbothprovideasequenceofeventsthatgivesstructuretotheessay.InthecaseofDavid'sessay,therobotbattleleadsnaturallytoadiscussionofmakingtherobot,andthentothesignificanceoftheproject.

"E2V2"wasmyowncreationandIwoulddriveitinBattleBotsIQ2003,anationalroboticscompetition.Ifeltmybodytenseforthebattleagainstthespinbot,Chromedome.Beforethematch,Ihadreviewedanddecidedmystrategyagainstspinbots—attackitbeforeitspinsupandthenkeephittingit.Ibelievedthetwo-poundtitaniumplatemountedatthefrontofmyrobotshouldbeabletoabsorbtheshockfromthehits.Thematchstarted;IdroveE2V2quicklytostrikeChromedomebeforeitsspinningshellreachedhighspeeds.E2V2'sagilityandunrelentingrammingsoonpartiallydisabledChromedome'sweaponanddrivesystem.Subsequently,E2V2'sverticalsteelbladesseveredChromedome'selectricalwiringandcausedittostartsmoking;theopponentwastotallyimmobilized.Afterforty-ninesecondsofcollisions,flyingsparks,andstrategicdriving,E2V2wasdeclaredthevictor.

Mypeersandadvisorsnominatedmetoleadthisextensiveroboticsproject.CreatingaBattleBotwasdaunting.However,Iwillinglyacceptedtheresponsibilitytobetheteamleader.MyteamandIanalyzedweaknessesinourpreviousrobots,watchedvideosofmatches,andbuiltprototypes.Afterexploringmanyoptionsandunderstandingscoringstrategy,myteamdecidedtomakeawedge-shapedrobotwithapairofverticalsteelbladestoinflictmaximumdamageonopponents.Wewouldadoptaggressivedrivingstrategiestodealwithdifferenttypesofopponents.

BesidesusingengineeringdesignprogramslikeAutoDeskInventorandAutoCAD,IlearnedtouseFeatureCAMtowritemanufacturingprocedures.TherewereinstancesinwhichIhadtomodifyprogramsbecauseoftheincompatibilitybetweencomputersoftware.MyadvisorinstructedmeintheuseoftheCNCMillingMachine.ItwasfascinatingtowatchthevariousdrillsandbitsconvertmycomputerprogramsintocomponentsforE2V2.

Afterinitialassembly,ourrobotdidn'tfunctionproperly.Theteamspentalotoftimetroubleshootingandconsultingwithadvisors.Gradually,weidentifiedtheproblemsandcorrectedthemaccordingly.Forexample,wechangedthelocationoftheantennatoenhanceitsreceptionofradiosignalsfromthecontroller.www.liuxue.laTheteamconstantlyexploredoptionstosolveproblemsandadoptednecessarychangeswhileassemblingtherobot.Prideandexcitementcanonlypartiallydescribemyemotionsuponthecompletionoftherobotthatconsumedsomuchofmytime.

Eventually,E2V2placedseventhoutofseventy-twopartici-pants.Attheclosingceremony,therobot'spolishedtitaniumarmorandsteelbladesreflectedtheflashesfromcamerasthatcelebratedthesuccessofE2V2.And,Iwasoverjoyed.

Returninghomefromasummerprogramthatcementedintellectualandsocialindependencetofindanewbabywasnotexactlythrilling.AddhimtothetoddlerandsevenyearoldsisterIhaveandthere'snowonderwhyIsingsongsfromBlue'sCluesandTheBackyardigansinsteadofsaneseventeenyearoldactivities.It'sneverbeensimple;asafemaleandtheoldest,Ihavetosignificantlyrearthechildrenandcleanuptheshabbyapartmentbeforeanounceofpseudofreedomreachesmyhands.IfIcanmanagetogetmytoddlerbrotherontothecitybusandtakehimhomefromdaycarewithoutsnotonmyshoulder,andifIcanmanagetotakeoffhiscoatandsneakerswithoutdemonicscreamingfornoapparentreason,thenit'sagoodday.Only,wakingupatthreeinthemorningtowork,theonlyfreetimeIhave,isnotmycupofStarbucks.
