OneofthesepeoplewasthenaturalistJohnMuir.In1867,onhiswaywesttoSanFrancisco,JohnMuirwalkedthroughYosemiteandquicklyrecognizeditsincomparablebeauty.Muirdevotedhimselftolearningasmuchaboutthewildernessashecould.Then,hewouldpassthislearningontoothersinthemanyarticleshewrotedescribingthebeautyofthearea.InordertoprotectYosemitefromdamage,MuirbecamethevoicebehindagovernmentbillthatwouldcreateYosemiteNationalPark.Soonotherbillswouldfollow,andMuirwouldcontinuehisfighttomakeAmericansunderstandtheimportanceofprotectingthewild.In1901,Muirwroteabookaboutthenationalparks,whichcaughttheattentionofpeopleallovertheUnitedStates,includingPresidentTheodoreRoosevelt.

Atayoungage,TheodoreRoosevelthadshownsignsofapassionthatwouldstrengthenthroughouthislifetime.DuringatriptoNorthDakotain1883hesawthedamagedonetothelandanditswildlife.

RooseveltwouldtakehisideasaboutconservationwithhimtotheWhiteHouseasthecountry’s26thpresident.HewouldgoontocreatetheU.S.ForestService,150nationalforests,and5nationalparks.Rooseveltevencanceleda1903presidentialspeakingtourinordertospendtwoweekscampinginYellowstone,wherehegaveaspeechcallingforitsprotection.WhilevisitingYosemite,RooseveltcampedforthreedayswithJohnMuir,whoshowedthepresidentaroundandpersuadedhimtomakeYosemiteValleyapartofthelargerYosemiteNationalPark.Afterthetrip,RooseveltcommentedthattherewasnobetterpersonintheworldwithwhomtoseeandappreciateYosemite.

Thenaturalbeautythattouristsfromaroundtheworldenjoytodayinthecountry’snationalparksislargelyduetotheeffortsofRooseveltandMuir,whodevotedthemselvestoanideathathasbenefitedallpeople.
