OnJuly4,1776,asecretmeetingofinsurgentcolonistsinAmericapassedtheDeclarationofIndependence.WaragainsttheBritishhadalreadybeengoingonforoverayear,sothedeclarationcameastheclimaxofyearsofstormyeventsinAmerica.

TheimpetusfortheAmericanRevolutionwastheTreatyofParisin1763,whichendedthestrugglebetweentheBritishandFrenchforcontroloverNorthAmerica.SincethecolonistswerenolongerfrightenedbytheFrench,theyceasedtorelyupontheBritishforprotectionandwerenotassubmissiveastheywereformerly.Ontheotherhand,theBritishregardedthecoloniesasasourceofrevenueandbegantoimposeunfairtaxesuponthem.TheSugarActin1764andtheStampActin1765weresoeagerlyopposedbydiscontentedcoloniststhatriotingbrokeout.TheStampActwasrepealedin1766asaresultoftheriots.

TheBritishcontinuedtheirpolicyoftaxationwithoutcollaborationwiththeironceobedientsubjects.TheTownshendActs（aseriesoftaxesonglass,lead,paperandtea）createdsuchdisgustthatthecitizensofBostonattackedBritishsoldierswhofireduponthem.Anewteataxin1773againconsolidatedBostonresidents’disagreement.AboutfiftymendisguisedasIndiansboardedBritishshipsandgotridoftheircargoofteainprotestagainsttheteatax.ThatwasthefamousBostonTeaParty.Inreprisal,theBritishabolishedtheBostonians’righttoself-rule,andbypassingwhatwerereferredtoasIntolerableActsinBoston,theyinfuriatedallofthecoloniesandcausedthemtouniteinprotest.

TheinventionofthesnowhousebytheEskimowasoneofthegreatesttriumphsoverenvironmentthatmanhaseveraccomplished.

IntheArcticCircle,itisnotthatpeoplelackabilityorindustry,butthesurroundingsrestrictconstructiveefforttothebarestnecessitiesofexistence.

Agricultureisimpossibleallalongthethousandsofmilesofthenorthshore.Theonlywoodissuchasdriftsin.Otherthanthisdriftwood,theonlyavailablebuildingmaterialsaresnow,ice,stoneandbonesofanimals.Allofthesehavebeenusedfordwellingsandstorageplaces,differinginvarioustribesaccordingtotherequirementsandskilloftheworkers.
