1.Introduction
IhavebeenteachingEnglishforthreeyears.NowI’mteachingthestudentswhoareintheirfirstyearofajuniormiddleschoolinmyhometown.InmyteachingI’vefoundtherearesomeproblems.OneofproblemsisthatmanystudentshaveconsiderabledifficultytomemorizeEnglishwords.TheyrememberedfewEnglishwords.Andthenlotsofstudentscouldn’twritedownanythingwhentheyhadexams.AndtheirEnglishwasverypoor.Moreover,asweknowthatwordsarethefirstandforemostimportantstepinlanguageacquisition.Inthatcase,I’llfinishmystudyinLongchuanRadio&TelevisionUniversity.IhopeIcandealwiththeproblemsthathavetroubledmeforsometimethroughtheactionresearchsothatIcanapplymyknowledgeandtheoryintopractice,whichIlearnedfromLongchuanRadio&TelevisionUniversity.
2.SummaryofthePreliminaryResearch
ThispartofmystudywasconductedfromFebruary10thtoFebruary26th,2012.
2.1Problem
TheproblemIhaveinmyteachingisthatmostofmystudentsfindithardtoremembernewwords.
2.2Problemanalysis
Inmyteaching,theproblemidentifiedwasreallyaseriousproblem.MypreliminaryresearchconfirmedthattherewerethreemainreasonsthatledtostudentshardtorememberEnglishwords.
Firstofall,somestudentsusuallymemorizednewwordsonebyoneafterclass.Theyfeltboredandforgotthemeasily.Secondly,somestudentsonlyreadtheEnglishwordsonebyoneagainandagainwithoutcontexteverymorning.Andtheyneverusedthemanddidn’tknowhowtousethemintopractice.Thirdly,someofthemthoughtEnglishlessonsareboredanddifficult.Theyhadtomemorizealotofnewwordsineachclass.Theyalsoneededtolearnsomeusefulexpressionsandgrammarpointsineachclass.Sotheydidn’thavesomuchtimeknowingwellallofthem.TheproblemhadbeentroublingmeforalongtimeandnowIwasdeterminedtofindasolutiontotheproblem.Inmystudy,Iusedfourmethodsofanalysis.
2.2.1Analyticmethod
Mostofmystudentssaidthattheycouldn’tmemorizeEnglishwordswellanddidn’tknowhowtomemorizethemefficiently.Theyalwaysgotpoorscoresintheexamseveniftheyknewgrammarswell.Theproblemmademethinkoftheothersideoftheissue:
afewtopstudentsdidwellinmemorizingEnglishwords.Thismademethinkofthese:
Whymostdon’t,whileafewdo?
Whoarethey?
Moreover,mystudentswereincontrastwithmycolleague'sstudents.Thisinspiredmetomakeachainofreflections.Whataboutmycolleague’sstudents?
WasitalsothecausesthatwerepoorinrememberingEnglishwords?
Ontheotherhand,ifallofmycolleagues’studentsweregoodatmemorizingnewwords,thenmyproblemisactuallycausedbymyself,notbystudents.Perhapsthatthewaysofteachingnewwordsinmyclasswerepoorlydesignedandormyteachingapproachwasinefficient.Throughtheaboveanalysis,Irealizedthatmyproblemisprobablycausedbymyteachingtechniqueandmethods.
2.2.2Causeanalysis
Iconsideredmyproblemfromtheteacher’sside,thestudents’side,thehomeworkandexercise’ssideandtheclasssizeside.Inthissituation,Iaskedmyselfaseriesofquestionsandtriedtoprovidesomeanswerstothem.Inordertoknowmoreaboutthisproblem,Idesignedacauseexplorationprocedurelikethis:
◇Theteacher'sside
Isitbecausetheteachingwaysandstepsofnewwordsarepoorlydesigned?
Yes.
IsitbecausethatIdonotspendenoughtimeteachingnewwordsineachclass?
Maybe.
IsitbecausethatIdon’thaveenoughenthusiasmwhenIhaveEnglishclasses?
Possiblyyes.
Ismyvoicenotloudandclearenoughforthestudentsatthebacktohear?
Maybe.
◇Thestudents'side
IsitbecausetheyarenotinterestedinEnglish?
Maybe.
IsitbecausetheydonotthinkitisimportantandnecessarytomemorizeEnglishwordsandthentheycanlearnEnglishwellinothersides?
Maybe.
Isitbecausetheyhavesomedifficultiesunsolvedbythemselves?
Yes.
Isitbecausetheydon’thaveenoughtimetoremembersomanynewwordsafterclass?
Yes.
◇Thehomeworkandexercisedesign
Thehomeworkandexerciseswerepoorlydesignedandtheformsofthemwereinflexible.
◇Theclasssize
Myclasshas60students.Suchabigclassmayhavesomenegativeeffects.Theclassistoonoisy.Someofstudentarenotconcentratedenough.Moreover,mostofthemdidn’tpayenoughattentiontoEnglishlearningandlostinterestsinEnglishlearningintheprimaryschoolsastheydidn’tneedentranceexaminationwhentheygetinjuniormiddleschool.
Ofallthecauses,Ibelievedthattheteacherwasmainlyresponsibleforthefailure.Iwantedtoknowwhatmystudentsthoughtabouttheproblem.
2.2.3Questionnairesurvey
Inordertoknowaboutthesituation,Imadeapilotinvestigationforit.Forthispurpose,Ididaresearchprocedurelikethefollows.Oneday,Iaskedthemtomemorizetwentynewwordsintwoways—rememberthemthroughonebyoneandmemorizetheminthecontext.Thenextday,Icheckedhowmanywordstheyhadmemorizedasbelow:
Onlyfivestudentscouldmemorizeallnewwordsinthecontextcorrectly.
Aroundfivestudentsrememberedallnewwordsthroughonebyonecorrectly.
Abouttenstudentsonlyrememberedafewnewwordsthroughonebyone.
Therestdidnotmemorizeanynewwords.
ThenIaskedthemtwoquestions.OnewaswhysomestudentshadmemorizedtheallnewwordscorrectlyIarranged.Thestudents’answers:
Atfirst,thosewhohadrememberednewwordsinthecontextsaidtheywereinterestedinEnglishandtheyalsoconsideredmemorizingnewwordswithsentenceseasilyandunforgettable.AndtheywantedtolearnEnglishwell.
Secondly,thosewhohadmemorizednewwordsthroughonebyonesaidtheyhadmasteredtheminordertofinishthehomeworkwhatIarrangedandgethighscoresinthefutureexams.
Theotherquestionwaswhyafewstudentsonlyrememberedafewnewwordsthroughonebyoneandtherestdidnotmemorizeanynewwords.Thestudents’answers:
Firstofall,mostofthemthoughtmemorizingnewwordswasboring.Moreover,theydidn’tlikeEnglishclassespeciallyteachingnewwords’period.
Secondly,theythoughtitwashardforthemtomemorizesomanynewwordsinonetime.Andtheydidn’tknowhowtomemorizenewwordsinthecontexteffectively.Theycouldonlyremembernewwordsthroughonebyoneandforgotthemshortlyafterfinishingthem.
Thirdly,somestudentshadforgottenthepronunciationsofthenewwordsafterclass.Sotheydidn’tknowhowtoreadthemandrememberthem.
Fourthly,theythoughttheydidn’thaveenoughtimetofinishsomuchhomeworkgivenbytheteachersofdifferentsubjectsmustbehandedinthenextday.Furthermore,alltheteacherswouldcheckitcarefully,whiletheEnglishteachermightspendalittletimecheckingstudents’memorizationofnewwordsbeforeclass.
Sincemostofmystudentsfoundithardtoremembernewwordsanddidn’tknowhowtomemorizenewwordseffectively,Idesignedaquestionnaire(toseeAppendixB)tofindoutwhyitshouldbeso.Iintendedtogetmoredetailed,moreexactopinionsfromallthestudentsthroughthequestionnaire.AndItriedtomakeitasscientificandeffectiveaspossible.AtfirstIaskedfourstudentswhowereofdifferentEnglishlevelstotryoutthequestionnaire.ThenImodifiedsomeoftheitems.AfterthatIgaveoneofmyquestionnairestomystudentsandgavethemtenminutestofinishit.
