Attheageofseven,heenteredalocalschool,wherehewasgiventhename“Nelson”,afterAdmiralHoratioNelsonoftheRoyalNavy,byateacherwhohaddifficultyinpronouncinghisAfrican'name.Thatname,Rolihlahla,means"troublemaker".

In1927,whenMandelawasnine,hedecidedtobecomealawyer,influencedbythecasesthatcameonhisfather.In1942MandelaenteredpoliticsbyjoiningtheAfricanNationalCongress(ANC),SouthAfrica'smajorliberationmovementandtodaythecountry'srulingparty.ItwasduringthistimethatheandasmallgroupofmainlyyoungmembersoftheANCgotdowntoatasktransformingthepartyintoamassmovement.

In1952,hewaschargedandbroughttotrialforhisroleinthecampaignoffightingagainstUnjustLawsandgivenaprisonsentence.The1950sturnedouttobeatimeofhardshipandsufferingforMandela-hewasbanned,arrestedandimprisoned.

Whileinprison,MandelastudiedbycorrespondencewiththeUniversityofLondon,earningaBachelorofLawdegree.Heneverfacedwithhisteachers,buthisnamewasfamiliartoalltheteachersbymeansofhiswritingletters.

Afterspending27yearsinprison,MandelabecameSouthAfrica’sfirstdemocraticallyelectedpresidentin1994.Heunitedafearfulcountry,bringingtogetherblacksandwhitesinharmonyWhenSouthAfricawaslivingthroughviolentandtroubledtimes.Afterservingafiveyeartermaspresidentofthecountry,heretiredfrompubliclife,thoughnotfromthepubliceye.

Heisthegreatestsonofthenationandagreatfatherofhispeople.Morethanl,115awardsandhonors,eventheNobelPeacePrizehadbeenonhim.Morethan85streets,roads,avenues,bridges,highwayshadbeennamedafterMandela.
