"Iwasreallyhopingwe'dseethemgoingeast,andfindingareaswhichthefishhadmovedtobutitendsupbeingquiteasadstoryforthepenguins."saidRichard.

Theresearcherscalculatethatbyfallingintothisecologicaltrap,AfricanpenguinpopulationsonSouthAfrica'sWesternCapehavedeclinedbyaround80percent.

Someresearchgroupsareexploringtheideaofmovingthemtoaplacewheretheycan'tgettrapped,liketheEasternCape.ButSherleythinksthatasolutioninthelongrunmeansmakingandcarryingoutrulestocreatemoresustainable(可持续的)fishingindustry,whichneedspublicsupport.
