ReasonsfortheexistenceoftheUN

Sincethedayofitsbirth,theUnitedNationshasbeenthesubjectofmuchdebate.Somepeopleattacktheorganizationbecausetheythinkitistoopowerful.Othersthinkthatitistooweak.WecanbetterunderstandthisdebateifwelearnmoreabouttheUNanditshistory.

TheUNwasstartedfortworeasons.First,whentheideawasborn,peopleallovertheworldweretiredofwar.TheyweretirednotjustofWorldWarⅡ,butofwaritself.Theyfeltthattheremustbepeacefulanswerstotheworld'sproblems.Theyfeltthatonlyaninternationalorganizationcouldkeepworldpeace.

Thesecondreasonwasthatmodernsciencehaddevelopednewbombsandairplanes.Theseweaponsmadeitalmostimpossibleforacountrytodefenditself.Nationalborderswerebeginningtolosetheirmeaning.Therewasalsoafeelingthatthiswasonlythebeginning.Sciencewoulddevelopevenmoredangerousweaponsinthefuture.Onlyaninternationalorganizationwouldbeabletocontrolmodernscience.

FoundersoftheUN

FranklinDelanoRoosevelt,whowasPresidentoftheUnitedStatesatthetime,believedthattheAlliesshouldplanforpeacebeforethewarended.OnDecember1,1943,Roosevelt,WinstonChurchillofGreatBritainandJosephStalinoftheformerSovietUnionagreedtostartanorganizationforworldpeace.Theyaskedallcountries,largeandsmall,tojointhem.

Duringthenextyearandahalf,theideaofsuchanorganizationwasdebatedinallthecapitalsoftheworld.Thencameabigdayinmodernhistory.OnApril11,1945,thefirstinternationalmeetingoftheUnitedNationstookplaceinSanFrancisco.

ThegoalofthemeetingwastowritetheUNCharter.Allofthefifty-onenationsatthemeetinghadtheirownideastoofferfortheCharter.Afteralongdebate,aCharterwasagreedupon.EverynationpresentvotedfortheCharter,noonevotedagainstit.

TheUNCharter

TheUNCharterisabeautifulpieceofwriting.InlanguageitexplainswhytheUNwasstarted.Thereasonsare:

1）tokeepworldpeace;2）tofindanswerstotheworld'ssocialandeconomicproblems;3）towinrespectforhumanrights;and4）tohelpwinfreedomforpeopleonearth.

Since1945,thenumberofnationsthathavesignedtheUNCharterhasmorethandoubled.Thesecountriescontainalmostthewholepopulationoftheworld.EverykindofgovernmentcanbefoundattheUN.Andthereisoneideawhichallthesecountriesagreeon:

theneedforworldpeace.

MostoftheofficesoftheUnitedNationsareinNewYorkCity.ButthereareotherimportantUNofficesallovertheworld.TheWorldHealthOrganization,forexample,isinGeneva,Switzerland.TheInternationalCourtofJusticeisinHague,Holland.

ThebuildingsinNewYorkstandalongtheEastRiverontheislandofManhattan.Theparkaroundthemleadsrighttothewater.TheparkcontainsmanyworksofartthatweregivenaspresentstotheUNbymembercountries.
